RESUMEN

Reconstructing the oxygenation history of Earth's oceans during the Ediacaran period (635 to 539 million years ago) has been challenging, and this has led to a polarizing debate about the environmental conditions that played host to the rise of animals. One focal point of this debate is the largest negative inorganic C-isotope excursion recognized in the geologic record, the Shuram excursion, and whether this relic tracks the global-scale oxygenation of Earth's deep oceans. To help inform this debate, we conducted a detailed geochemical investigation of two siliciclastic-dominated successions from Oman deposited through the Shuram Formation. Iron speciation data from both successions indicate formation beneath an intermittently anoxic local water column. Authigenic thallium (Tl) isotopic compositions leached from both successions are indistinguishable from bulk upper continental crust (ε205 TlA ≈ -2) and, by analogy with modern equivalents, likely representative of the ancient seawater ε205 Tl value. A crustal seawater ε205 Tl value requires limited manganese (Mn) oxide burial on the ancient seafloor, and by extension widely distributed anoxic sediment porewaters. This inference is supported by muted redox-sensitive element enrichments (V, Mo, and U) and consistent with some combination of widespread (a) bottom water anoxia and (b) high sedimentary organic matter loading. Contrary to a classical hypothesis, our interpretations place the Shuram excursion, and any coeval animal evolutionary events, in a predominantly anoxic global ocean.

RESUMEN

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) biomineralizing organisms have played major roles in the history of life and the global carbon cycle during the past 541 Ma. Both marine diversification and mass extinctions reflect physiological responses to environmental changes through time. An integrated understanding of carbonate biomineralization is necessary to illuminate this evolutionary record and to understand how modern organisms will respond to 21st century global change. Biomineralization evolved independently but convergently across phyla, suggesting a unity of mechanism that transcends biological differences. In this review, we combine CaCO3 skeleton formation mechanisms with constraints from evolutionary history, omics, and a meta-analysis of isotopic data to develop a plausible model for CaCO3 biomineralization applicable to all phyla. The model provides a framework for understanding the environmental sensitivity of marine calcifiers, past mass extinctions, and resilience in 21st century acidifying oceans. Thus, it frames questions about the past, present, and future of CaCO3 biomineralizing organisms.

The morphology and composition of clasts have the potential to reveal the nature and extent of erosional processes acting in a region. Dense accumulations of granule- to pebble-sized clasts covering the ground throughout the Glen Torridon region of Gale crater on Mars were studied using data acquired by the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover between sols 2300 and 2593. In this study, measurements of shape, size, texture, and elemental abundance of unconsolidated granules and pebbles within northern Glen Torridon were compiled. Nine primary clast types were identified through stepwise hierarchical clustering, all of which are sedimentary and can be compositionally linked to local bedrock, suggesting relatively short transport distances. Several clast types display features associated with fragmentation along bedding planes and existing cracks in bedrock. These results indicate that Glen Torridon clasts are primarily the product of in-situ physical weathering of local bedrock.

Determining how soft tissues are preserved and persist through geologic time are continuing challenge because decay begins immediately after senescence while diagenetic transformations generally progress over days to millions of years. However, in recent years, carbonate concretions containing partially-to-fully decayed macroorganisms have proven to be remarkable windows into the diagenetic continuum revealing insights into the fossilization process. This is because most concretions are the result of biologically induced mineral precipitation caused by the localized decay of organic matter, which oftentimes preserves a greater biological signal relative to their host sediment. Here we present a comparative lipid biomarker study investigating processes associated with soft-tissue preservation within Holocene-age carbonate concretions that have encapsulated modern capelin (Mallotus villosus). We focus on samples collected from two depositional settings that have produced highly contrasting preservation end-members: (1) Kangerlussuaq, Greenland: a marine environment, which, due to isostatic rebound, has exposed strata containing concretions exhibiting exceptional soft-tissue preservation (6-7 kya), and (2) Greens Creek, Ottawa, Canada: a paleo brackish-to-freshwater marine excursion containing concretions exhibiting skeletal remains (~11 kya). Lipid biomarker analysis reveals endogenous capelin tissues and productive waters at Kangerlussuaq that are in sharp contrast to Greens Creek concretions, which lack appreciable capelin and environmental signals. Comparable distributions of bacterial fatty acids and statistical analyses suggest soft-tissue preservation within concretions is agnostic to specific heterotrophic decay communities. We, therefore, interpret preservation within carbonate concretions may represent a race between microbially induced authigenic precipitation and decay. Namely, factors resulting in exceptional preservation within concretions likely include: (1) organic matter input, (2) rate of decay, (3) carbonate saturation, (4) porewater velocity, and (5) rate of authigenic (carbonate) precipitation resulting in arrested decay/bacterial respiration due to cementing pore spaces limiting the diffusion of electron acceptors into the decay foci.

RESUMEN

Incontinentia pigmenti is an uncommon X-linked dominant neurocutaneous ectodermal dysplasia. The disorder is usually lethal in males in utero, although it may occasionally occur in males with somatic mosaicsism or Klinefelter syndrome. This is a case report of a rare case of incontinentia pigmenti in a newborn male who presented with characteristic skin eruptions following Blaschko's lines. Histopathology and genetic testing confirmed the diagnosis. The management of patients with incontinentia pigmenti may require a multidisciplinary approach, and early diagnosis is of great importance.

The spatial coverage and temporal resolution of the Early Paleozoic paleoclimate record are limited, primarily due to the paucity of well-preserved skeletal material commonly used for oxygen-isotope paleothermometry. Bulk-rock [Formula: see text] datasets can provide broader coverage and higher resolution, but are prone to burial alteration. We assess the diagenetic character of two thick Cambro-Ordovician carbonate platforms with minimal to moderate burial by pairing clumped and bulk isotope analyses of micritic carbonates. Despite resetting of the clumped-isotope thermometer at both sites, our samples indicate relatively little change to their bulk [Formula: see text] due to low fluid exchange. Consequently, both sequences preserve temporal trends in [Formula: see text] Motivated by this result, we compile a global suite of bulk rock [Formula: see text] data, stacking overlapping regional records to minimize diagenetic influences on overall trends. We find good agreement of bulk rock [Formula: see text] with brachiopod and conodont [Formula: see text] trends through time. Given evidence that the [Formula: see text] value of seawater has not evolved substantially through the Phanerozoic, we interpret this record as primarily reflecting changes in tropical, nearshore seawater temperatures and only moderately modified by diagenesis. Focusing on the samples with the most enriched, and thus likely least-altered, [Formula: see text] values, we reconstruct Late Cambrian warming, Early Ordovician extreme warmth, and cooling around the Early-Middle Ordovician boundary. Our record is consistent with models linking the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event to cooling of previously very warm tropical oceans. In addition, our high-temporal-resolution record suggests previously unresolved transient warming and climate instability potentially associated with Late Ordovician tectonic events.

Mudstone-hosted microfossils are a major component of the Proterozoic fossil record, particularly dominating the record of early eukaryotic life. Early organisms possessed no biomineralized parts to resist decay and controls on their fossilization in mudstones are poorly understood. Consequently, the Proterozoic fossil record is compromised-we do not know whether changing temporal/spatial patterns of microfossil occurrences reflect evolution or the distribution of favourable fossilization conditions. We investigated fossilization within the approximately 1000 Ma Lakhanda Group (Russia) and the approximately 800 Ma Svanbergfjellet and Wynniatt formations (Svalbard and Arctic Canada). Vertical sections of microfossils and surrounding matrices were extracted from thin sections by focused ion beam milling. Elemental mapping and synchrotron-based infrared microspectroscopy revealed that microfossils are surrounded by haloes rich in aluminium, probably hosted in kaolinite. Kaolinite has been implicated in Cambrian Burgess Shale-type (BST) fossilization and is known to slow the growth of degraders. The Neoproterozoic mudstone microfossil record may be biased to tropical settings conducive to kaolinite formation. These deposits lack metazoan fossils even though they share fossilization conditions with younger BST deposits that are capable of preserving non-mineralizing metazoans. Thus metazoans, at least those typically preserved in BST deposits, were probably absent from sedimentary environments before approximately 800 Ma.

The rise of animals occurred during an interval of Earth history that witnessed dynamic marine redox conditions, potentially rapid plate motions, and uniquely large perturbations to global biogeochemical cycles. The largest of these perturbations, the Shuram carbon isotope excursion, has been invoked as a driving mechanism for Ediacaran environmental change, possibly linked with evolutionary innovation or extinction. However, there are a number of controversies surrounding the Shuram, including its timing, duration, and role in the concomitant biological and biogeochemical upheavals. Here we present radioisotopic dates bracketing the Shuram on two separate paleocontinents; our results are consistent with a global and synchronous event between 574.0 ± 4.7 and 567.3 ± 3.0 Ma. These dates support the interpretation that the Shuram is a primary and synchronous event postdating the Gaskiers glaciation. In addition, our Re-Os ages suggest that the appearance of Ediacaran macrofossils in northwestern Canada is identical, within uncertainty, to similar macrofossils from the Conception Group of Newfoundland, highlighting the coeval appearance of macroscopic metazoans across two paleocontinents. Our temporal framework for the terminal Proterozoic is a critical step for testing hypotheses related to extreme carbon isotope excursions and their role in the evolution of complex life.

Iron deficiency is a common cause of reactive thrombocytosis resulting in usually mild to moderately increased but sometimes even in extreme thrombocytosis (ie, >1000×109/L). We report a case of a 34-year-old woman who developed an increased platelet count of 1953×109/L. Upon admission, cytoreductive therapy was initiated until an underlying chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia was ruled out. The patient had undergone bariatric surgery 5 years previously, and surprisingly, a diagnosis of reactive thrombocytosis due to iron deficiency secondary to iron malabsorption was made. It is concluded that the degree of extreme thrombocytosis may be even fourfold to fivefold increased in patients with severe iron deficiency. Our finding emphasises the importance of regular control of possible need for iron supplementation following bariatric surgery.

About a decade after its introduction, the field of carbonate clumped isotope thermometry is rapidly expanding because of the large number of possible applications and its potential to solve long-standing questions in Earth Sciences. Major factors limiting the application of this method are the very high analytical precision required for meaningful interpretations, the relatively complex sample preparation procedures, and the mass spectrometric corrections needed. In this paper we first briefly review the evolution of the analytical and standardization procedures and discuss the major remaining sources of uncertainty. We propose that the use of carbonate standards to project the results to the carbon dioxide equilibrium scale can improve interlaboratory data comparability and help to solve long-standing discrepancies between laboratories and temperature calibrations. The use of carbonates reduces uncertainties related to gas preparation and cleaning procedures and ensures equal treatment of samples and standards. We present a set of carbonate standards of diverse composition, discuss how they can be used to correct for mass spectrometric biases, and demonstrate that their use significantly improves the comparability among four laboratories. We propose that the use of these standards or of a similar set of carbonate standards will improve the comparability of data across laboratories.

RESUMEN

Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a common complication in patients with cancer during treatment with antineoplastic drugs. The initial cause is usually bacterial, and treatment of FN follows well-defined algorithms. We report a case of a 62-year-old patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), who developed FN, which was unresponsive to both empirical antibacterial and empirical antifungal therapy. Surprisingly, a diagnosis of the life-threatening condition haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was made and treated successfully. CMV-associated HLH has not previously been described in patients with CLL treated with rituximab and bendamustine. It is concluded that HLH should be considered in patients with cancer with FN not responding to conventional antibiotic therapy.

Microfossils, stromatolites, preserved lipids and biologically informative isotopic ratios provide a substantial record of bacterial diversity and biogeochemical cycles in Proterozoic (2500-541 Ma) oceans that can be interpreted, at least broadly, in terms of present-day organisms and metabolic processes. Archean (more than 2500 Ma) sedimentary rocks add at least a billion years to the recorded history of life, with sedimentological and biogeochemical evidence for life at 3500 Ma, and possibly earlier; phylogenetic and functional details, however, are limited. Geochemistry provides a major constraint on early evolution, indicating that the first bacteria were shaped by anoxic environments, with distinct patterns of major and micronutrient availability. Archean rocks appear to record the Earth's first iron age, with reduced Fe as the principal electron donor for photosynthesis, oxidized Fe the most abundant terminal electron acceptor for respiration, and Fe a key cofactor in proteins. With the permanent oxygenation of the atmosphere and surface ocean ca 2400 Ma, photic zone O2 limited the access of photosynthetic bacteria to electron donors other than water, while expanding the inventory of oxidants available for respiration and chemoautotrophy. Thus, halfway through Earth history, the microbial underpinnings of modern marine ecosystems began to take shape.This article is part of the themed issue 'The new bacteriology'.

The purpose of the study was to assess the risk of first-time bloodstream infection (BSI) according to type of central venous catheter (CVC) during induction therapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Patients eligible for our analysis were all newly diagnosed children with ALL treated at 3 pediatric centers in Denmark between 2008 and 2014. A total of 136 patients were followed from initial CVC placement until first BSI, CVC removal, death, or day 28, whichever occurred first. Thirty-nine BSIs were detected, of which 67% were gram-positive infections, and 59% met the criteria for being CVC associated. The 28-day cumulative incidence of BSI was similar in 77 patients with a nontunneled CVC (28%; 95% confidence interval, 19%-40%) and in 59 patients with a tunneled CVC with external lines (TE) (33%; 95% confidence interval, 23%-47%). Subgroup analyses showed that gram-negative blood isolates occurred more frequently in patients with a TE, and that lower incidences of BSI were detected in patients older than 9 years with a TE, and in patients with T-ALL. It is concluded that the type of CVC inserted at diagnosis has no impact upon the risk of BSI in patients with ALL undergoing induction therapy.

Understanding ancient climate changes is hampered by the inability to disentangle trends in ocean temperature from trends in continental ice volume. We used carbonate "clumped" isotope paleothermometry to constrain ocean temperatures, and thereby estimate ice volumes, through the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian glaciation. We find tropical ocean temperatures of 32° to 37°C except for short-lived cooling by ~5°C during the final Ordovician stage. Evidence for ice sheets spans much of the study interval, but the cooling pulse coincided with a glacial maximum during which ice volumes likely equaled or exceeded those of the last (Pleistocene) glacial maximum. This cooling also coincided with a large perturbation of the carbon cycle and the Late Ordovician mass extinction.
