RESUMEN

Information technology (IT) has dramatically transformed business processes in many industries including healthcare, where electronic health records, electronic prescribing and computerized provider order entry systems have positively changed the practice of healthcare. Recently, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Saudi Arabia, implemented various IT systems in multiple clinical and administrative departments leading to major transformation in healthcare workflows and business processes. At the pharmacy department, many Healthcare-IT alignment challenges are still perceived. Information about challenges of strategic alignment were gathered using qualitative survey methods, through conducting semi-structures interviews, to collect opinions, experiences and suggestions. Findings were first validated, according to published literature and research work, then sorted into fourteen challenges categorized into four main areas and recommended solutions: 1) Improving organizational communication, 2) Enhancing organizational governance, 3) Specifying the alignment scope and building the architecture and 4) Developing organizational and human skills.

Adverse drug events could require a patient to visit the emergency department, many of these visits lead to hospital admissions. A retrospective study, October 2015 to March 2016, examined the severity and factors contributing to medications related emergency visits leading to admissions at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Out of 698 reviewed patients, 92 were medications related admissions. Adverse drug reactions were the primary cause (46.7%), drug prescribing (30.4%), compliance (14.1%), and drug dosing (8.7%). The majority of cases were of moderate severity (82.6%). Most medications involved in emergency admissions were antihypertensive (18.4%), chemotherapy (17.4%), anticoagulant (15.2%), and anti-diabetics (12%). Emergency admissions secondary to medication could be minimized whenever the causes of problems are identified. Motivating physicians to apply shared decision making strategy during prescribing and involving pharmacists in emergency and ambulatory care setting is highly important and to educate patients and support healthcare providers in making best medications related decisions.

High turnover rate among healthcare professionals is a very expensive price that healthcare organizations might pay if they don't have the proper strategies for motivating and satisfying their employees. Healthcare organizations should be able to identify areas that require more attention. Many studies discussed the vital link that bonds job satisfaction with motivation, which has a major impact on productivity, innovation, and overall organizational performance. Our study explored the level of job satisfaction and factors that motivate pharmacists in Saudi hospitals using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods. From pharmacy managers' point of view; financial rewards are more important than non-financial incentives and benefits. This contradicts with pharmacists' opinions; who ranked recognition, promotion, job satisfaction, job feedback, autonomy and task significance among the most influential motivators to pharmacists. These results show that managers need to revise their plans and provide further attention to ensure that effective motivation and retention strategies are put in place.
