RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Developmental defects of enamel (DDE) are a result of disturbances during formation and maturation of the enamel. Evaluating the most-cited DDE papers can provide important tools that point to the gaps and strengths of this important topic in dentistry. SUMMARY: This bibliometric study analyzed the 100 most-cited papers on DDE. Using a combined keyword search strategy, the 100 most-cited papers were selected in the Web of Science Core Collection. Papers that addressed any type of DDE were included. The extracted data were title, number of citations, study theme, authorship, journal, type of DDE, type of dentition (primary or permanent), type of diagnosis, study design, year, and country of publication. The bibliometric networks were generated through VOSviewer software. The 100 papers had a range from 78 to 459 citations. The main themes of studies were etiopathogenesis (53%), prevalence and incidence (22%), and diagnosis (8%). The authors with the highest number of citations were Goodman AH and Rose JC (459 citations). Most articles were published in dental journals (47%). The most studied types of DDE were fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta in the permanent dentition (47%). Observational (24%) and non-systematic reviews (24%) were the most common study designs and ranged from 1977 to 2019. The country with the highest number of publications was the USA (41%). KEY MESSAGES: Most of the top 100 DDE papers were about fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta, with top papers from three continents with English as the native language. This topic is of great importance in dentistry, and the need for further studies is highlighted, especially regarding the diagnosis and treatment of some DDEs.

RESUMEN

Background: The present in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the surface roughness of a colored compomer and a composite resin, after 15 days of erosive-abrasive cycling. Material and Methods: The sample included ninety circular specimens, randomly divided (n = 10): G1 Berry, G2 Gold, G3 Pink, G4 Lemon, G5 Blue, G6 Silver, G7 Orange and G8 Green, referring to the different colors of compomer (Twinky Star®, VOCO, Germany) and G9 for composite resin (Z250®, 3M ESPE). The specimens were submerged in artificial saliva and stored at 37°C for 24 hours. After polishing and finishing, the specimens were submitted to initial roughness (R1). Then, the specimens were submerged in an acidic cola-based drink for 1 minute and then exposed to electric toothbrushing for 2 minutes for 15 days. After this period, the final roughness (R2) and the ΔRa were performed. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test for intergroup comparison and paired T-test for intragroup comparison (p<0.05). Results: Among compomers, the green color presented the higher/lower initial and final roughness values (0.94 ± 0.44, 1.35 ± 0.55) with lemon color presenting the most prominent real roughness increase (ΔRa = 0,74) whereas composite resin showed the lower values (0,17 ± 0.06, 0,31 ± 0.15; ΔRa = 0,14). Conclusions: All compomers, after the erosive-abrasive challenge, presented an increase in roughness values when compared to composite resin with a highlight to green tones. Key words:Compomers, composite resins, surface properties.

Currently, an arsenal of restorative materials is available for applicability in pediatric dentistry. The advances in restorative materials conducted to need for further studies in this thematic. The present study presents two investigation proposals: 1) Cross-sectional study aiming to evaluate the preference of parents and children regarding the use of colored compomer (Twinky Star®, Voco, Germany); 2) Bibliometric-altmetric study aiming to analyze the 50-most cited papers regarding to restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry and the dissemination of scientific information in online media. The cross-sectional study included 260 pairs of caregivers/children aged 5 to 11, in two public health services, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte-MG. Examination for dental caries was performed by an examiner calibrated to the criteria of the World Health Organization. A dental mannequin containing colored compomers restorations and conventional materials (composite resin, glass ionomer cement and dental amalgam) was presented to the population and a survey was conducted about the preference of dental materials. Parents' Style and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Junior (EPQ-J) were applied, the last one only for parents/caregivers of children aged 5 to 6. Descriptive, bivariate and Poisson regression analyzes were performed. Most adults (74.2%) preferred conventional materials. Family income (p= 0.001) and education level (p< 0.001) were associated with its choice. Age up to 7 (p< 0.001) associated with children's choice for colored restorations (72.3%). Children younger than 7 had 1.20 higher probability to choose colored compomers than their older pairs, while adults with children younger than 7 and less than 11 years of schooling had 1.74 and 2.17 higher probability to choose colored compomers, respectively. It was concluded that caregivers with higher educational level showed greater resistance to use of colored restorations and children younger than 7 had better acceptance of colored material. The bibliometrics-altmetrics study adopted a search strategy in three databases (Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar), independent of the year of publication. After selection of papers by a panel of five researchers, in March 2023, any restorative material used in deciduous teeth was included and data about the title, number of citations, country/continent, authorship, journal, design of the study, type of restorative material, university and altmetrics score were analyzed. The papers, published between 1991 and 2002, ranged from 19 to 113 citations. The authors with the highest number of citations were Qvist V and Teglers PT. The experimental study was the main study design observed. Analyzing the continent and country with the highest number of citations, Europe highlighted and Brazil was predominant. The altmetric score was present in 23 papers, emphasizing two articles (43/6th and 73/7th). It was concluded that glass ionomer cement was the most studied material. A gap between the position of the papers correlating the bibliometrics and altmetrics analyzes was evident, demonstrating the need to disseminate the information beyond academic circles.

Introduction: the innovation of photopolymerization methods was proposed in an attempt to reduce the polymerization shrinkage stress of composite resins and also provide more comfort to patient reducing the chair time. The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the microhardness of two nanofilled composite resins subject to different curing techniques. Objective: assess the microhardness of two nanofilled composite resins subject to different curing techniques. Material and method: forty specimens were divided into four groups (N=10) as follows: Filtek Z350 XT® + immediate technique (GI); Filtek One Bulkfill® + immediate technique (GII); Filtek Z350 XT® + delayed pulse technique (GIII); Filtek One Bulkfill® + delayed pulse technique (GIV). After storage in distilled water at room temperature the specimens were assessed for microhardness measurement. T-test was used for comparison of techniques and two-way ANOVA used to calculate the effects of composite resins, curing techniques and their interactions on dependent variable (p set at 0.05). Result: Filtek Z350 XT® resin presented greater hardness on immediate technique (GI - 312,45 ± 64.37) and delayed pulse (GIII - 244,50 ± 75.63) compared to Filtek One Bulkfill® under both techniques. Overall, it was observed greater hardness values under immediate technique with a significant statistical difference apart of tested resin (p = 0.04 - Filtek Z350 XT®; p = 0.03 - Filtek One Bulkfill®). Both isolated factors (resin and techniques) presented effect on microhardness values (p = 0.02 and p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: the conventional technique demonstrated to reach higher hardness values when compared to the alternative polymerization technique

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease, characterized by the progressive loss of the peri-implant support bone tissue. The objective of this study was to assess whether implantoplasty is efficacious in promoting peri-implant health. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, a search without restrictions regarding language or date of publication was conducted across different databases. Grey literature search, Google Scholar search and manual searches were also carried out. Studies evaluating periimplant clinical parameters of individuals with peri-implantitis who had been submitted to implantoplasty were included. Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were conducted. The outcome variables were implant probing depth, the percentage of implants with bleeding on probing or suppuration on probing, and the success rate of implants after implantoplasty. The predictor variable was implantoplasty and the follow-up time after implantoplasty. Data on sample size, implant location, implant diameter, and diagnostic criteria for peri-implantitis were also collected during data extraction. Meta-analysis, sensitivity analysis, and analysis of the probability of implant success after implantoplasty with the Kalan-Meier method were performed. RESULTS: Ninety-four studies were assessed. Eight articles were included and 7 were incorporated into quantitative analyses. Subjects' mean age ranged between 50 to 70.7 years. The studies demonstrated that implantoplasty contributed to a significant improvement in the peri-implant condition, reducing the probing depth, bleeding and suppuration on probing. Overall, the included studies exhibited low risk of bias. Meta-analysis demonstrated that probing depth before implantoplasty was significantly higher than after implantoplasty (mean difference = -3.37 mm, confidence interval = -4.74; -2.00). This result was confirmed in the sensitivity analysis. The probability of success of implants at 6 months of follow-up after implantoplasty was 97.5% and at 24 months of follow-up was 94.7%. CONCLUSIONS: There is some evidence in the literature to recommend implantoplasty as a potential treatment for periimplantitis.

RESUMEN

AIM: To test a chemical-mechanical method and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (a-PDT) in combination to manage a deep dental carious lesion in a permanent molar pediatric patient. BACKGROUND: Due to specific characteristics of early-erupted teeth, as first permanent lower molars, techniques that provide less invasive tissue removal aiming keep healthy tooth parts, such as pulp tissue, are desired. Furthermore, especially to children, provide comfort, less noise and vibration are important issues that should be considered on the management of deep caries. CASE DESCRIPTION: The following case report presents an association of Papacarie Duo® (PD) and a-PDT used in a 9-year-old patient with a deep dental caries in the mandibular right first molar. After PD application, the carious tissue was carefully removed with the cavity stained for 1 min with rose bengal solution, irradiated with a high intensity LED constituting the a-PDT technique, and definitively restored with composite resin. At 6 months of follow-up, no signs of caries were verified, showing success to applied techniques. A microbiological evaluation attested the antimicrobial effects of the alternative procedures. CONCLUSION: Although it reached optimal clinical and bacterial reduction outcomes, the approach demonstrated an excessive length of time taken for the management of carious lesion. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of new technologies should be encouraged, especially when treating deep caries aiming for a less invasive approach.

RESUMEN

The objective of this systematic review was to search for scientific evidence regarding the impact of periodontal therapy on serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) in type 2 diabetics. A survey was conducted in five databases. Two researchers read titles and abstracts for initial selection and full text for inclusion. Data extraction and methodological quality assessment were performed. Four hundred and fifty-five studies were identified and 15 were included. Significant divergence on the effect of periodontal intervention on IL-6 levels in diabetics was observed among studies. The evaluation results of studies that controlled obesity indicate that periodontal therapy seems to have beneficial effects on IL-6 levels.

Objective: the infectious and inflammatory process in periodontitis could contribute to the development of nosocomial pneumonia. The aim of this study was to review the scientific literature on the relationship between periodontitis and nosocomial pneumonia. Material and methods: a literature search was performed in the PubMed database, for studies that evaluated the impact of oral health in the development of nosocomial pneumonia. The nosocomial pneumonia and periodontitis terms were used in this search. Results: we selected, by two reviewers, four articles to be included in this literature review: a cross-sectional, a case-control, a systematic review and a clinical trial. Conclusion: the number of studies on the association between these two diseases is extremely low. The improvement of knowledge about the potential role of periodontal infection in the nosocomial pneumonia installation is critical because this respiratory infection is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Additional studies are needed to elucidate the relationship between these two pathological conditions.
