RESUMEN

The Laser Megajoule (LMJ) is among the most energetic inertial confinement fusion laser facilities in the world, together with the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the USA. The construction of the facility began back in 2003, and the first photons were emitted by the laser bundle #28 in 2014. Today, 11 laser bundles consisting of 88 large aperture 0.35×0.35m 2 laser beams are in operation, delivering daily up to 330 kJ of energy at the wavelength of 351 nm on a target placed in the center of a 10 m diameter vacuum chamber. In this paper, we describe the laser system and its operational performances. We also detail the first laser campaigns carried out to prepare an increase of energy and power on the target. These campaigns, along with the completion of additional bundles mounting, will bring LMJ performance to 1.3 MJ thanks to 22 bundles in operation.

RESUMEN

Background: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis in adults, which causes ESKD in ≤45% of patients in the long term. The optimal therapeutic approach remains undetermined. In this study, we report the results of a single-center retrospective analysis of patients with IgAN. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the therapeutic approach and outcome of all patients at our center with biopsy-proven IgAN between 2000 and 2020, focusing on the effect of intravenous cyclophosphamide therapy combined with glucocorticoids ("immunosuppressive therapy group"). The control group received standard supportive care. Results: Patients in the immunosuppressive therapy group had worse kidney function before the initiation of therapy, as indicated by higher serum creatinine, more proteinuria, and a higher degree of hematuria than the control group; they also displayed a higher body mass index. The Oxford classification of IgA nephropathy (MEST-C score) suggested more inflammatory activity in the immunosuppressive therapy group, including more crescents and endocapillary hypercellularity. During the follow-up, proteinuria and hematuria decreased in both groups, and to a significantly greater extent in the immunosuppressive therapy group. Cyclophosphamide treatment significantly improved kidney function as determined by the fold-change of eGFR during the observation period. The number of infections and hospitalizations did not differ, but the incidence of diabetes was increased in the immunosuppressive therapy group. Conclusions: This study suggests immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide combined with glucocorticoids improves kidney function, proteinuria, and hematuria. The therapy was safe for infectious complications, but was associated with an increased incidence of diabetes, which might be attributable in part to the use of steroids in patients with a higher body mass index at baseline. Although immunosuppressive therapy in IgAN remains controversial, our findings suggest that at least some patients benefit from more aggressive therapy.

RESUMEN

We clarify the definition of the polarization extinction ratio-also called polarization cross talk--of fiber-based devices. Its strong wavelength dependence, even for simple devices such as a single-fiber patchcord, is highlighted. Thus white sources may not be used for most measurements. We also explain the weakness of measurements with a rotating polarizer and a monochromatic source. Only a polarimeter may be used if accuracy is required. We report measurements of connections (including two connectors and one mating sleeve) and show the importance of the mating sleeve in the result. Finally, we define the validity domain of the standardized method, which uses both a white source and a rotating polarizer.

RESUMEN

Macro-invertebrate assemblages on organic and conventional rice fields were quantitatively compared in the Camargue (Rhone delta, France). There was no major difference in family richness, but significant differences as regard to abundance. Fipronil, the insecticide used to control chironomid larvae, was one of the main factors explaining those differences. Its negative impact on predatory invertebrates appears to explain the paradoxical lack of difference in chironomid abundance between organic and conventional fields, observed during the study. Macro-invertebrate biomass estimation showed that, for some birds such as herons, conventional rice fields offered a lower value as foraging habitats than organic ones.
