RESUMEN

An autochthonous case of epididymal histoplasmosis masquerading as tuberculosis in a 55-year-old male patient is reported from India. It was diagnosed by culture of Histoplasma capsulatum from semen and by demonstration of the fungus upon re-examination of epididymal biopsy sections previously misinterpreted as tuberculous granuloma. The patient's main complaints were painful epididymal swelling, occasional fever and cough. He was treated successfully by excision of epididymis and vas deferens combined with amphotericin B therapy. This is believed to be the first case of epididymal histoplasmosis to be reported outside the American continent and the fourth of its type reported in the English literature. The case is also noteworthy in that H. capsulatum was isolated for the first time from semen, and it underlines the importance of mycological culture of semen specimens for diagnosis of genitourinary infections of obscure etiology.

RESUMEN

Healthy and protein deprived rhesus monkeys were inoculated with a virulent strain of Plasmodium knowlesi, to determine the morphological changes in the brain and to establish whether this model could be utilised as an experimental model for cerebral malaria. The histomorphological changes produced in the brain did not correspond with the changes conforming to those of cerebral malaria. The changes observed in healthy controls were cerebral oedema, high percentage of parasitised RBCs in the cerebral capillaries, with prominent and, at places, disrupted endothelium. In the protein deprived animals, cerebral oedema was the only conspicuous feature. It appears that the P. knowlesi-rhesus monkey combination is not suitable as an experimental model for cerebral malaria.

RESUMEN

A twenty five year retrospective study of malignant tumours was carried out. Malignant digestive tract tumours were about 10% of the total. Segment distribution of the lesion showed highest incidence in large intestine (43.3 percent), oroparynx (34.5 percent), stomach (11.3 percent), oesophagus (6.5 percent) and small intestine (4.4 percent). The maximum cases (74.2 percent) were between 31-60 years, the youngest being a two month old female with rhabdomyosarcoma orpharynx and the oldest a 82 year old male with squamous cell carcinoma anal canal.

RESUMEN

A 12-year-old male child had spontaneous, recurrent bouts of profuse bleeding from the nose for 15 days. On examination of the nose a purplish polypoidal mass, which bled at touch filled the entire right nasal cavity. On lateral rhinotomy, a soft, greyish, cheesy mass was found, choking the maxillary, frontal, ethmoidal sinuses and the nasal cavity on the right side. It was completely excised. The histopathology report was vascular hamartoma (haemangioma).

RESUMEN

A case of endometrioma of the right kidney with extensive involvement is presented. The patient complained of vague pain in the right lumbar region with no specific symptom relating to the kidney. An excretory urogram revealed a hydronephrotic kidney and diagnosis was a renal hydatid cyst. The 7 cases reported previously in the medical literature are reviewed briefly.
