RESUMEN

This article seeks to contribute to human becoming theory and to nursing by providing an international human becoming hermeneutic study of Thomas Hegg's A Cup of Christmas Tea. The human becoming hermeneutic method was used in this study to discover emergent meanings about human experiences. Guided by the method, the authors discovered three emergent meanings: honoring the cherished; communing with the was, is, and will be; and triumphing with new vision. These meanings were synthesized by the authors. A Cup of Christmas Tea is the story of the way triumphing with new vision arises with honoring the cherished in communing with the was, is, and will be. The conclusion for families and nurses is that by remaining open to all possibilities that exist in each now, moments of serendipitous togetherness can transform human trepidation and negative views of later life.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to uncover the meaning of the lived experience of feeling loved. The site of this study was a shelter-based parolee program. The framework that guided the study was Parse's human becoming theory, and the method was Parse's research methodology. The finding of this study is the lived experience of feeling loved is an unshakable presence arising with moments of uplifting delight amid bewildering trepidation. The findings integrated into the human becoming theory show the paradoxical and dialectic nature of feeling loved. Feeling loved is linked to living freedom, trust, and hope.

RESUMEN

In older adults, falls represent a very common and dangerous problem. Older adults lack the normal overlap or redundancy of cognitive, sensory, and musculoskeletal mechanisms that help younger people avoid falling while remaining active. Many of the risk factors for falls in older adults are modifiable and deserve aggressive attention. Successful prevention of falls, fall-related injuries, and fear of falling is complicated by the multifactorial nature of the problem. Advanced practice nurses' comprehensive health assessment skills, holistic orientation, and willingness to collaborate with healthcare providers from a range of disciplines are helpful in dealing with the complexity of balance problems and falls. Nurse practitioners can be effective case managers for older adults at risk for falling. Older adults need accurate information, and sometimes counseling, to realize that falls, fall-related injuries, and fear of falls are warning signs that can provide direction and motivation for change and prevention.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this research was to ascertain the meaning of fathering for fathers of children with congenital anomalies. The human becoming theory was the theoretical perspective for this descriptive-exploratory study. Findings showed that fathering for these participants is a desire to grasp the situation, mingled with disturbing feelings, while facing one's limits and gives rise to comforting views. Comfortable-uncomfortable ways of being with others emerge as fathering shifts one from the familiar to the unfamiliar, surfacing the joy-sorrow of the always-changing "now" and the unpredictable "not yet." Implications for further research and practice are also discussed.

RESUMEN

This article contrasts the assumptions and concepts of two distinct approaches, the medical model and Parse's human becoming theory, as applied in a nurse-managed capitated community healthcare program for older adults. Many nurses incorporate aspects of the medical model into their practice without fully appreciating the implications or being aware of alternative perspectives. Within capitated health programs a nursing practice based on a nursing theory which emphasizes an intersubjective dialogue with older adults as they move toward different meanings and free choice is seen as more likely to be associated with greater satisfaction and reduced healthcare expenditures than a nursing approach based on the medical model, which relies on the objectification of human experience. Nurses can best balance the problem-focused orientation of a medical model dominated healthcare system by adopting an approach committed to recognizing that persons are the coauthors of their existence.

RESUMEN

The number of children living in shelters in the United States dramatically increased during the 1980s. Despite this increase in number, little is known about their experiences. The purpose of this research using Parse's method was to generate a structure of the lived experience of feeling uncomfortable for children in shelters. The investigator sought to expand nursing's knowledge base about feeling uncomfortable and to provide a better understanding of the experiences of children in families with no place of their own. The findings suggest that the lived experience of feeling uncomfortable for the participants is a disturbing uneasiness with the unsureness of aloneness with togetherness amidst longing for personal joyful moments. These findings, considered from Parse's human becoming theory, create a theoretical structure of feeling uncomfortable. Similarities and differences with related literature are discussed. Implications for practice and further research are offered.

RESUMEN

The Parse research method is a human science based nursing research methodology which views young children as partners in research about universal lived experiences. To view children in this way requires a considerable revision of the view of children assumed in many traditional theories of childhood and in research with children. In the human science paradigm, persons of all ages are viewed as human beings who make choices and assign meaning. In accord with the assumptions of the Parse research method, children are considered the experts about their health and capable of contributing to nurses' understanding of the human-universe-health process. The remarkable variation of children's thoughts, feelings and actions testifies to the complex and open nature of human becoming at all ages. Children's thoughts, feelings, and imaginings are made more accessible with the aid of art, stories, and play when offered in true presence.

RESUMEN

In the past decade there has been a dramatic rise in the number of children living in shelters in the United States. The traditional literature suggests that these children are at risk for various developmental, educational, and health problems, and that they are in need of assistance. Psychoanalytic theory and Parse's human becoming theory have fundamentally different views of human nature and of human activities such as artistic expression. While both theories can contribute to the present understanding of the experience of children in shelters and provide frameworks for a shelter-based nursing practice, it is suggested in this article that psychoanalytic theory is reductionistic and prescriptive and may close rather than open new possibilities.

RESUMEN

The purpose of the research reported here was to explore with mothers and children the experience of having no place of their own. The researcher used Parse's theory of human becoming as a framework in this exploratory descriptive study. For the participants in this study the experience of living without a place of their own is: a sense of gratitude for protection, mingling with the discomfort of restriction and exposure, giving rise to fears and reassurances as detachment from cherished others surfaces discordance with unfamiliar patterns, while novel engagements bring pleasure as insights and struggles surface new possibles as well as disillusionment. Suggestions for theory expansion and further research are discussed.

RESUMEN

Especially in later stages, persons with HIV frequently experience changes in mental status. Providing accurate mental health assessment of persons with HIV is an essential aspect of quality nursing care. Physical, cognitive and affective symptoms often overlap for the person in the later stages of HIV disease, making the assessment process more complicated. Using the current information and a few simple neuropsychological tests can help nurses avoid some of the more common problems in mental health assessment of persons with HIV.

RESUMEN

In this study, the meaning of the experience of being homeless as lived by 15 homeless women with dependent children is explored. The significance of being homeless is approached from what is known about the concept of home. Following a review of the literature, an identification of the sample, and an explanation of how data were collected, a three-level phenomenological method was utilized: description, reduction, and interpretation. The descriptive level generates seven themes: boundaries, connections, fatigue/despair, self-respect, self-determination, privacy, and mobility. The reduction level reveals three ways of being homeless: physical, social, and symbolic. The interpretation of the meaning of being homeless employs the metaphor of homelessness as a whirlpool. Implications for nursing and social policy are discussed.
