RESUMEN
The paper presented a case of acute occupational poisoning with silver vapours. The course of the ailment was very serious. The clinical picture corresponded to the syndrome of the "shock lung"--with extreme respiratory insufficiency. The treatment included administration of steroids, heparin, antibiotics and controlled respiration with a positive endexpiratory pressure (PEEP). The patient was completely cured and fully regained physical fitness. Our observation seems to shake the hitherto predominant view of non-toxicity of metallic silver or its vapours.

In 18 persons (anaesthetists and anaesthetic nurses) with a history of long-term exposure to low concentrations of halothane the activity of aminotransferases, GGTP, and alkaline phosphatase, the bilirubin level and thymol turbidity test were determined and no significant abnormalities were found. On the other hand, determinations of immunoglobulons showed changes in the raised IgM level in 15 out of 18 persons, the difference between the normal level and that found in the present studies being statistically significant. The levels of IgA and IgG were within the normal range. Raised IgM level may be due to stimulation of the immune system by halothane.

The reported studies were carried out on 22 persons, 15 anaesthetists and 7 anaesthetic nurses with a history of long-term exposure to halothane in low concentrations. The activity of gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGTP) and aminotransferases, the level of bilirubin and thymol turbidity test were determined. No significant abnormalities were found in the mean values of these determinations. In some cases a rise in alkaline phosphatase activity and in two cases a rise of GGTP were found. The results are not suggesting the presence of hepatocellular damage in this group.

Changes in the activities of three enzymes (nitrate reductase, l-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, and a dehydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-oxidase complex) were measured during development of water stress in young maize (Zea mays) plants.l-Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and nitrate reductase activities decreased markedly with water deficits of 10 to 20%. The activities did not reach zero at water deficits as high as 50%, but appeared to approach a new steady state. Partial to complete recovery of enzyme activity occurred 24 hours after rehydration of the stressed plants. The oxidase activity did not respond to water stress in the same manner as that of the other two enzymes. It is suggested that the level of enzyme activity is a consequence of an equilibrium between the rates of synthesis and degradation, and that progressive tissue dehydration reduces both the enzyme synthesis and the enzyme-inactivating systems.
