BACKGROUND: The identification of the activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signalling pathway as a frequent molecular event in canine cutaneous papillomas (CPs) has provided the rational foundation to explore novel molecular-targeted therapies. Recent evidence indicates that metformin reduces the size of CPs in mice by inhibiting the mTOR signalling pathway. These effects require the expression of the organic cation transporter 3 (OCT3/SLC22A3), a well-known metformin uptake transporter. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to characterise the expression pattern of the metformin uptake transporter OCT3 in canine samples of CP that have shown activation of the mTOR signalling pathway in order to predict if this hyperplastic epidermal lesion is potentially sensitive to metformin. METHODS: The expression of OCT3 was evaluated by immunohistochemical investigation in sections of a previously constructed tissue microarray containing 28 samples of canine CP and compared with that previously evaluated for the mTOR activation marker pS6. RESULTS: OCT3 was highly expressed in the membrane and cytoplasm of the basal and suprabasal epidermal cells in all samples of canine CP. This OCT3 expression was localised at similar epidermal compartments to those observed for pS6. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These results show that canine CPs exhibit the expression of surrogate markers that suggest sensitivity to metformin, such as upregulated OCT3 and pS6 expression. Taken together, these findings provide the rationale for the early assessment of the use of metformin as a mechanism-based therapeutic approach for treating canine patients with persistent or multiple CPs.

Pigs have the highest percentage of embryonic death not associated with specific diseases of all livestock species, at 20-45%. During gestation processes, a series of complex alterations can arise, including embryonic migration and elongation, maternal immunological recognition of pregnancy, and embryonic competition for implantation sites and subsequent nutrition requirements and development. Immune cells and cytokines act as mediators between other molecules in highly complex interactions between various cell types. However, other non-immune cells, such as trophoblast cells, are important in immune pregnancy regulation. Numerous studies have shed light on the crucial roles of several cytokines that regulate the inflammatory processes that characterize the interface between the fetus and the mother throughout normal porcine gestation, but most of these reports are limited to the implantational and peri-implantational periods. Increase in some proinflammatory cytokines have been found in other gestational periods, such as placental remodeling. Porcine immune changes during delivery have not been studied as deeply as in other species. This review details some of the immune system cells actively involved in the fetomaternal interface during porcine gestation, as well as the principal cells, cytokines, and molecules, such as antibodies, that play crucial roles in sow pregnancy, both in early and mid-to-late gestation.

Bovine alphaherpesvirus type 1 (BoAHV-1) is associated with respiratory and reproductive syndromes. Until present the immunologic mechanisms involved in BoAHV-1 abortion are partially known. We studied key elements of the innate immune response in the placentas and fetal lungs from cattle experimentally-inoculated with BoAHV-1. These tissues were analyzed by histopathology. Furthermore, virus identification was performed by qPCR and the expression of the inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin 1-alpha and inflammatory mediators like inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxeganse-2 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The viral transplacental infection was confirmed by the detection of BoAHV-1 by qPCR in the placenta and fetal organs, which revealed mild inflammatory lesions. Inducible nitric oxide synthase immunolabelling was high in the lungs of infected fetuses and placentas, as well as for tumor necrosis factor-alpha in the pulmonary parenchyma and cyclooxeganse-2 in fetal annexes. However, the expression of interleukin 1-alpha was weak in these organs. To our knowledge, this is the first study that provides strong evidence of an early immune response to BoAHV-1 infection in the conceptus. Advances in the knowledge of the complex immunological interactions at the feto-maternal unit during BoAHV-1 infection are needed to clarify the pathogenesis of abortion.

In viviparous teleosts, intraovarian gestation occurs intrafollicularly, as in poeciliids, or intraluminally, as in goodeids and anablepids. Furthermore, there are two different forms of embryonic nutrition: lecithotrophy and matrotrophy; depending on the species, these can be exclusive or coexist during gestation. In matrotrophic species, nutrients are transmitted from the mother to the embryo and are especially important in species with intraluminal gestation. Jenynsia lineata is a South American viviparous teleost with intraluminal gestation, characterized by eggs with scarce yolk, which is resorbed when embryos are 6 mm long, thus developing a branchial placenta. Using histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques, the present study describes the characteristics and changes of the ovarian mucosa in J. lineata during gestational and nongestational phases, and analyzes the embryonic pharyngeal epithelium in the branchial placenta. The ovaries of 30 adult female specimens were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, and Alcian Blue pH 2.5/periodic acid Schiff reagent. To detect cell proliferation, we used antiproliferating cell nuclear antigen antibody. In nonpregnant females, eosinophilic granular cells (EGCs) and lymphocytes were identified in the lamina propria of the tunica mucosa, and melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) and fibroblasts were identified adjacent to tissue debris in the ovarian folds'. In the cellular debris, an embryo in resorption was observed. In pregnant females, the ovarian mucosa has thin vascularization branches entering the opercular chamber of the embryos, in close contact with the forming gill processes, thereby establishing a branchial placenta. Active cell replacement was observed in these ovarian branches. The identification of fibroblasts, lymphocytes, EGCs, and MMCs adjacent to tissue debris could indicate that these cell types are involved in the embryonic resorption process. Considering the new data obtained in this study on the branchial placenta of J. lineata, we conclude that cell proliferation could be involved in the development of maternal-embryonic interaction.

The toxic effect of ferns of the genus of Pteris in bovines is caused by ptaquiloside, the main carcinogenic toxin. In this study, ten species of Pteris fern in different phenologic stages and plant conditions were collected in northwest Argentina. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of Pt in the recent collected samples (adults and young plants) but not in the herbarium specimens. The results show a great variation of Pt concentration that depends on the phenologic stage, plant condition, and collection site. Pt was measured in 6-4326 µg/g concentration, with a mean concentration of 644 µg/g. No Pt was detected in eight species of Pteris collected from herbarium samples; such results may be a false negative. It is important to notice that analysis of herbarium samples for Pt may not be a reliable method to determine its presence. It is important to further understand the potential toxicity caused by these ferns because of their effect on animals, public health, and the environment.

Decidualization is considered a distinctive feature of eutherian pregnancy, and has appeared during evolution along with the development of invasive forms of placentation, as the endotheliochorial placenta. Although decidualization is not massive in carnivores, as it is in most species developing hemochorial placentas, isolated or grouped cells regarded as decidual have been documented and characterized, mainly in bitches and queens. For the majority of the remaining species of the order, data in the bibliography are fragmentary. In this article, general morphological aspects of decidual stromal cells (DSCs), their time of appearance and lasting, data about the expression of cytoskeletal proteins and molecules considered as markers of decidualization were reviewed. From the data reviewed, it follows that carnivoran DSCs take part either in the secretion of progesterone, prostaglandins, relaxin, among other substances, or at least in the signaling pathways triggered by them. Beyond their physiological roles, some of those molecules are already being used, or are yet under study, for the non-invasive endocrine monitoring and reproductive control of domestic and wild carnivores. Only insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1, among the main decidual markers, has been undoubtedly demonstrated in both species. Laminin, on the contrary, was found only in feline DSCs, and prolactin was preliminary reported in dogs and cats. Prolactin receptor, on the other hand, was found in both species. While canine DSCs are the only placental cell type expressing the nuclear progesterone receptor (PGR), that receptor has not been demonstrated neither in feline DSCs, nor in any other cell in the queen placenta, although the use of PGR blockers leads to abortion. Against this background, and from the data gathered so far, it is unquestionable that DSCs in carnivorans do play a pivotal role in placental development and health. The knowledge about placental physiology is critical for medical care and breeding management, primarily in domestic carnivores; it is also absolutely crucial for a conservation approach in the management of endangered carnivore species.

Concentration of interferon-gamma and interleukin-10 in maternal serum and in maternal and fetal porcine placental extracts from different gestation periods was determined. Crossbred pigs' placental samples of 17, 30, 60, 70, and 114 days gestation and non-pregnant uteri were used. Interferon-gamma concentration was increased at the placental interface at 17 days, in maternal and fetal placenta, and decreased significantly in the remaining gestation periods. Interferon-gamma showed a peak in serum at 60 days. Regarding interleukin-10, placental tissue concentrations were unaltered, there were no significant differences with non-gestating uteri samples. In serum interleukin-10 increased at 17, 60, and 114 days gestation. At 17 days there are uterus structural and molecular changes that allow the embryos implantation and placenta development. The presence of interferon-gamma found at this moment in the interface would favor that placental growth. Moreover, its significant increase in serum at 60 days, would generate a proinflammatory cytokine pattern that facility the placental remodeling characteristic of this moment of porcine gestation. On the other hand, a significant interleukin-10 increase in serum at 17, 60 and 114 days could indicate its immunoregulatory role at a systemic level during pig gestation.

Hematopoiesis occurs in different anatomical niches throughout the life of the individual. The first hematopoietic extra-embryonic stage is replaced by a intra-embryonic stage that occurs in a region that is adjacent to the dorsal aorta. Then, the prenatal hematopoietic function is continued by the liver and spleen, and later by the bone marrow. The objective of the present work was to describe the morphological characteristics of hepatic hematopoiesis in the alpaca and to analyze the proportion of the hematopoietic compartment of the organ and the cell types, at different times of ontogeny. Sixty-two alpaca samples were collected from the municipal slaughterhouse of Huancavelica, Perú. They were processed by routine histological techniques. Hematoxylin-eosin staining, special dyes, immunohistochemical techniques and supplementary analyses by lectinhistochemistry, were performed. The prenatal liver is an important structure in the expansion and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. Their hematopoietic activity was characterized by four stages: initiation, expansion, peak, and involution. The liver started its hematopoietic function at 21 days EGA and it was maintained until shortly before birth. Differences were found in the proportion and morphology of the hematopoietic tissue in the different groups corresponding to each gestational stage.

Using morphological and molecular studies, the life cycle of Versteria cuja (Cestoda: Taeniidae) was elucidated, involving subterranean rodents (Ctenomyidae) as intermediate hosts, and the lesser grison, Galictis cuja (Mustelidae), as definitive host. Metacestodes (cysticerci and polycephalic larvae) were found mainly in the liver but also in spleen, pancreas, lungs and small intestine of 2 species of tuco-tucos (Ctenomys spp.) from Chubut, Argentina. Identity of the metacestodes with the adult was based primarily on the number, size and shape of rostellar hooks: 40­48 hooks in 2 rows, particularly small (10­16 µm total length by 6­10 µm wide), composed of handle, blade and guard with characteristic shapes. Genetic analysis (cox1 gen mtDNA) performed on metacestodes from both intermediate hosts corroborated their conspecificity with adults of V. cuja from lesser grisons in the same locality. Histopathological study showed the hepatic parenchyma altered by the presence of cysts containing larvae, each surrounded by a capsule of connective tissue with inflammatory infiltrate, atrophied hepatocytes and an increase of bile ducts. In the lung, in addition to the cysts, dilated alveoli, oedema and hyperaemic blood vessels were observed. This is the first report of a natural life cycle of a Versteria species from South America. It shows strong similarities with that described for a North American zoonotic lineage of Versteria, confirming a close relationship between V. cuja and this North American lineage, as previously demonstrated by molecular studies. Consequently, the zoonotic potential of V. cuja should not be disregarded.

The main evolutionary milestone in the oviparity-viviparity transition is placentation. The placenta is an organ with great morphological diversity among eutherians. The expression of different glycosidic residues (Gr) in the near-term placenta constitutes its glycotype. In this study, the expression of different Gr was determined by lectin histochemistry in early, midterm, and near-term placentas of the plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus), a caviomorph rodent with the highest poliovulatory rate and embryonic resorption rate among eutherians. Besides, a matrix with the expression of each Gr in the exchange trophoblast of viscacha and other eutherians was constructed to map and infer phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships. Between early, midterm, and near-term placentas, variations in the pattern expression of Gr were observed. The glycotype of the near-term placenta is composed of a high diversity of Gr. Reconstruction of the ancestral state for each Gr present in the near-term placenta showed a diverse scenario: some sugars were common to the species of Placentalia included in this study. In the analyzed species with synepitheliochorial and epitheliochorial placentas, no differential glycosylation patterns between them were observed. In species with invasive placentas, such as the endotheliochorial placentas of Carnivora, some common Gr were detected among them, while others were species-specific. In species with hemochorial placenta, the same Gr are shared. Particularly, in the viscacha greater differences with species of the Hominidae and even Muridae families were observed. Nevertheless, greater similarities with other caviomorph rodents were detected. Placental glycotype of each species constitutes an excellent tool to achieve phylogenetic and evolutionary inferences among eutherians.

In the present work, we emphasize the studies about integrins and their receptors in pig placental interface at different times of gestation. Uterine placental interface (n=24) of 17-, 30-, 60- and 70-days gestation (dg) and non-pregnant uterus (n=4) of crossbred sows were used. The presence of αvß3 and α5ß1 integrins, and their ligands fibronectin (FN), and osteopontin (OPN) were detected by immunohistochemistry, and the immunolabelled area percentage (IAP) and the optical density (OD) were determined. The integrins and its ligands analyzed have presented peaks of expression in early and mid-gestation, both in IAP and the OD area decreasing at 70 dg. These temporal changes showed us that the molecules studied in this work participate in embryo/feto-maternal attachment, variably. Besides, we found a significant correlation both in the intensity and in the extension of immunostaining for trophoblastic FN and endometrial αvß3, and trophoblastic OPN and endometrial α5ß1, throughout the entire pig pregnancy. At late gestation, take place a notable placental remodelation with subsequent removal or renewal of folds at the uterine-placental interface that results in the loss of focal adhesions. The decrease of the expression of some integrins and their ligands in late gestation, particularly at 70 dg, would demonstrate that there would be other adhesion molecules and other ligands that could be participating in the establishment of the maternal-fetal interface.

The process of aging is the result of progressive loss of homeostasis and functional body impairment, including the central nervous system, where the hypothalamus plays a key role in regulating aging mechanisms. The consequences of aging include a chronic proinflammatory environment in the hypothalamus that leads to decreased secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and impairs kisspeptin neuron functionality. In this work, we investigated the effect of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) gene therapy on hypothalamic kisspeptin/GnRH neurons and on microglial cells, that mediate the inflammatory process related with the aging process. The results show that IGF1 rats have higher kisspeptin expression in the anteroventral periventricular (AVPV) nucleus and higher immunoreactivity of GnRH in the arcuate nucleus and median eminence. In addition, IGF1-treated animals exhibit increased numbers of Iba1+ microglial cells and MHCII+/Iba1+ in the AVPV and arcuate nuclei. In conclusion, IGF1 gene therapy maintains kisspeptin production in the AVPV nucleus, induces GnRH release in the median eminence, and alters the number and reactivity of microglial cells in middle-aged female rats. We suggest that IGF1 gene therapy may have a protective effect against reproductive decline.

The aims of this study were to determine the changes in the capillary area density in relation to fetal development, to determine immunoexpression of angiogenic factors and to compare their mRNA expression throughout pig gestation. Samples were collected from the maternal-chorioallantoic interface at days 40, 77, 85 and 114 of pregnancy for immunohistochemistry analysis and the measurement of mRNA expression of VEGFA, ANGPT1, ANGPT2, FGF2 and its receptors KDR, TEK, FGFR1, FGFR2respectively. Morphometric measurement of blood vessels was performed. We found a significant increase in capillary area density throughout gestation (P< 0.05). On the maternal side, at day 77, we observed a significant increase in the number of vessels from small vascular areas (P < 0.05) and the vascular area was significantly higher on day 85 (P < 0.05). On the fetal side, the number of vessels and the vascular area increased between days 40 and 77 (P < 0.05) and between days 77 and 114 (P < 0.05), respectively. Immunohistochemical findings revealed intense VEGFA staining and a trend for increased expression towards the end of gestation (P < 0.05). We also demonstrated a high VEGFA, FGF2, FGFR1, ANGPT1 and ANGPT2mRNA expression at day 77 (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our findings suggest that an active angiogenesis would be present even until late-middle gestation at day 77 of pregnancy with the predominance of angiogenic stimulation by VEGFA/KDR, FGF2/FGFR1 and a balance between ANGPT1 and ANGPT2/TEK. Lay summary: Critical moments occur at different stages of placental formation in pigs, where the expression of angiogenic factors, that is, molecules that stimulate the formation of blood vessels must be adequate to promote their development. This exchange is necessary to cover the increasing nutritional demands of fetuses in continuous development. Determining the changes in the area of capillary density in relation to fetal development and the expression of angiogenic factors throughout pregnancy in pigs could contribute to understanding the causes of fetal loss. Placental samples were obtained at gestational days 40, 77, 85 and 114 (n = 7, 10, 7 and 5, respectively). We found that the capillary area density increases accompanying fetal growth with advancing gestation and an increase in capillary area density in late-middle gestation, around day 77, is due to the expansion in the number of small blood vessels on the maternal side. The present findings suggest that an intense angiogenesis would be present even until late-middle gestation at day 77 of pregnancy, with the predominance of angiogenic stimulation by specific molecules that promote this process.

Flamingos inhabit specialized habitats and breed in large colonies, building their nests on islands that limit the access of terrestrial predators. Many aspects of their uropygial gland are still unknown. The uropygial gland, a sebaceous organ exclusive to birds, shares some histological features among species such as the presence of a capsule, adenomers with stratified epithelium and secondary and primary chambers. We found that the uropygial gland of the Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) displays most of these characteristics but lacks a primary storage chamber. This absence may be an adaptation to their aquatic environment. The uropygial secretion of this species has a variety of glycoconjugates while its lipid moiety is largely dominated by waxes and minor amounts of triacylglycerols and fatty acids. Mass spectrometry analysis of the preen wax showed branched fatty acids of varied chain length and unbranched fatty alcohols, resulting in a complex mixture of wax esters and no differences between sexes were observed. The glycoconjugates present in the preen secretion could play a role as antimicrobial molecules, as suggested for other bird species, while the absence of diester waxes in flamingos might be related with their nesting habits and limited exposure to predation. Our results were evaluated according to physiological and ecological aspects of the flamingo's biology.

The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration. For that, the gills were analysed using a stereoscopic microscope for morphometric studies, and structural and ultrastructural studies were carried out to compare the four branchial arches. Furthermore, two immunohistochemical techniques were used to locate and identify the presence of a Na+ /K+ pump. The characterization of the potential for cell proliferation of this organ was assessed using an anti-PCNA antibody. The results show that gills of C. paleatus present some characteristics related to its diet and lifestyle, such as the limited development of gill rakers and the abundance of taste buds. In addition, other special features associated with the environment and bimodal breathing were observed: scarce and absent mucous cells (MCs) in the gill filaments and branchial lamellae, respectively, and the localization of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) covering the basal third of the branchial lamellae, which reduces the gill respiratory area. A peculiar finding in the gill epithelium of this armoured catfish was the presence of mononuclear cells with sarcomeres similar to myoid cells, whose functional importance should be determined in future studies. Finally, in C. paleatus, the interlamellar space of gill filaments is an important site for cell turnover and ionoregulation; the latter function is also performed by the branchial lamellae.

Five adult Saanen goats received a single oral dose of Heterophyllaea pustulata containing 42.25 µg/kg rubiadin (anthraquinone) and 3 adult goats were untreated controls. All goats were exposed to sunlight and sequential ear skin biopsies were collected before treatment and at 32 hours, 3 days, 8 days, and 15 days after treatment. Changes at 32 hours after dosing included epidermal spongiosis, single cell death and acantholysis, an increased BAX/BCL-2 protein ratio, and dermal edema. Lesions at day 3 included epidermal and adnexal necrosis, crust formation, and acanthosis. Acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, and dermal fibrosis and neovascularization were present at day 15. The pro-apoptotic (BAX)/anti-apoptotic (BCL-2) protein ratio increased at 32 hours, whereas epidermal and dermal PCNA immunolabeling increased between days 8 and 15 after treatment. The cutaneous lesions were consistent with sunlight-induced damage, and the occurrence in treated but not control goats indicates photosensitization.

Embryonic death followed by resorption is a conserved process in mammals. Among the polyovular species, Lagostomus maximus (plains viscacha) constitutes a model of early and physiological embryonic death, since out of a total of 10-12 implants, 8-10 are resorbed during early/intermediate gestation, surviving are only the most caudal implantations of each uterine horn. This regular reproductive event is unique to this species, but many characteristics of the implantations during the early gestation of L. maximus, when embryonic death processes begin are unknown. The aim of the present work was to analyze the implantation sites of this species using morphological, morphometric, histochemical, lectinhistochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques to infer the possible causes of this event. Macroscopically, the length and width of the implantation sites significantly increased in a craniocaudal direction. Histochemically, the implantation sites did not differ in the expression of glycoconjugates and glycosidic residues. Furthermore, no variations were observed in cell renewal, hormone receptor expression, and decidualization. Both the glandular and vascular areas of the implantation sites significantly increased in the craniocaudal axis. Some necrotic cells and an inflammatory response with a predominance of lymphocytes and fibrin were observed in the cranial and middle but not in the caudal implantation sites. We conclude that signs of embryonic death and resorption are already observed in the early gestation of L. maximus. Our results reaffirm the hypothesis that postulates the key potential role of uterine glands and blood vessels in the gestation of the species, with emphasis on embryonic death. This pattern of embryonic death in L. maximus makes this species an unconventional mammalian model, which adds to the peculiarities of polyovulation (200-800 oocytes/estrus) and hemochorial placentation.

During embryogenesis, teleost females do not develop Müllerian ducts, which form the oviducts in all other vertebrates. Thus, when they reach sexual maturity they do not have oviducts. In viviparous teleosts, the lack of oviducts means that the development of the embryos occurs as an intraovarian gestation, unique among vertebrates. The ovary is an unpaired hollow organ whose cavity is continuous with the caudal portion, the gonoduct, characterized by the absence of germinal cells, which opens to the exterior at the gonopore. The gonoduct attains essential function as a barrier between the germinal region of the ovary and the exterior during all reproductive stages. This study describes the functional morphology of the gonoduct in the viviparous teleost Cnesterodon decemmaculatus during non-gestation (previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis) and gestation. The ovaries were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and periodic acid Schiff. The gonoduct has two regions: cephalic and caudal, and is formed by three histological layers, which are, from inside to the periphery: (a) tunica mucosa; (b) tunica muscularis; and (c) tunica serosa. In the cephalic region there are mucosal folds extending into the lumen and forming a structure similar to a cervix. The histology of the gonoduct indicates essential functions, that is, (a) the control of the luminal diameter in the limit to the germinal region of the ovary by the presence of a cervix; (b) during insemination the gonoduct receives the spermatozoa, may store and transport them to the germinal region; (c) the presence of melano-macrophage centers indicates support of immunological processes, especially during gestation when these centers increase in size; (d) production of exocrine secretions; and (e) it is the birth canal, internally lined by an ciliated epithelium and surrounded by smooth musclesboth tissues supposedly supporting the birth process.

Atlantoraja platana is an oviparous skate endemic to the south-west Atlantic Ocean, and is one of the skate species most exploited by local industrial bottom trawl fisheries. Oviparous elasmobranchs encapsulate their eggs in complex egg cases produced by the oviductal gland (OG). This organ is exclusively present in these fishes and comprises four distinct zones: club, baffle, papillary and terminal. The relative size and structural complexity of these zones correlate with mode of reproduction. Glycans are known to play major roles in reproduction so their distribution in each zone of the OG could explain the functional multiplicity of the gland in skates, but this topic has not been previously investigated. In this study, morphological, histochemical and lectin-histochemical analysis revealed various novel aspects of A. platana's OG. The club, papillary and terminal zones positively stained for periodic acid Schiff's reagent (PAS) and Alcian Blue (AB), indicating the presence of neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides. However, the buffle zone was negative for PAS and AB stains, but was positive for all the lectins used. Each zone of the OG had a characteristic pattern of glycan expression. Finally, we confirmed the presence of sperm but not sperm storage. This is the first lectin-histochemical study of the OG in chondrichtyan fish and it has proven to be an important tool to understand some of the mechanisms of fertility and reproductive success in economic important species such as A. platana.
