RESUMEN

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is an antiseptic agent commonly used on intact skin in preparation for surgery and on open wounds. In oral surgery it is used for irrigating alveolar sockets following extraction. The present authors found by chance that irrigation of extraction sockets with povidone-iodine led to cessation of bleeding in patients without recurrence. Fifty patients were selected and divided equally into treatment and control groups. Povidone-iodine (1%, w/v) was used for irrigation of extraction sockets in the treatment group and saline was used in the control group. In the treatment group, 19 patients showed cessation of bleeding compared to only 5 in the control group. Povidone-iodine significantly (P<0.01) controlled bleeding as compared to saline. Iodine is corrosive due to its oxidizing potential while povidone is a thickening and granulating agent; together they may have a chemocauterizing effect that could be the reason for the cessation of bleeding. These results suggest that povidone-iodine may act as a hemostyptic as well as an antiseptic.

RESUMEN

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) are keratinizing epithelium-lined cycts of the jaws with well-defined histologic criteria and possessing one clinical feature warranting their recognition and separation as a distinctive entity, due to their exceedingly high recurrence rate. This report describes a case of OKC which occurred in the anterior maxilla in a 12 year old female child, with its treatment. These lesions are normally seen in the mandible, and are rare in the maxilla.

RESUMEN

Myiasis; a term first introduced by HOPE refers to invasion of living tissue of humans and other mammals by the eggs or larvae of flies of the order of Diptera. Orbital involvement occurs in approximately 5% of all cases of myiasis. A 72 year old patient is presented with orbital myiasis that was successfully treated by enucleation and grafted with split thickness of skin.

RESUMEN

A case of eosinophilic granuloma of the mandible with submandibular lymph node involvement in a medically compromised patient is presented. The lesion caused the pathologic fracture of the. mandible. It was treated radically with the resection of the mandible between the angle posteriorly and the midline anteriorly and immediate reconstruction with a 3DBDB AO reconstruction plate. This was followed by telecobalt therapy of 2000 cGys in 10 fractions over 20 days. The combined surgical and radiation therapy should be reserved for patients having: (1) unremitting pain following currettage (2) Limitation of activity (3) a medically compromised patient or (3) in whom radiographic findings suggest an aggressive lesion involving adjacent tissues and/or causing pathologic fractures.

RESUMEN

A ten-year-old girl was referred for the management of a recurrent lobulated mass present in the upper anterior region. Histopathological investigations were suggestive of capillary hemangioma. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed and postoperative recovery was uneventful.
