The operation of the Importation of Captive Birds Order 1976 is described. In the first 24 months that the order was effective, a total of 183,189 birds were landed. Of these 5829 (3.18 per cent) were dead on arrival, 8643 (4.71 per cent) died in quarantine and 474 batches of carcases were submitted for post mortem examination. Chlamydia infections were diagnosed in birds from 14 quarantine/isolation lots and salmonellae were isolated from 23 lots. Thirty-six haemagglutinating agents were isolated from 17 quarantine/isolation lots. These were identified as eight influenza A viruses with Hav 7 Neq 2 subtypes (associated with two importations); 14 influenza A viruses with Hav 4 Nav 1 subtypes (six importations); four yucaipa-like paramyxoviruses (three importations); four 449-like paramyxoviruses (two importations); one unspecified paramyxovirus; five Newcastle disease viruses (NDV) (two importations). Four of the NDV isolates, associated with one importation, were shown to be velogenic viruses by intravenous pathogenicity index tests in six-week-old chickens.

An open multicentre trial was carried out in 13 hypertensive patients, who had responded satisfactorily to and been stabilized on treatment with 400 mg acebutolol daily in divided doses, to assess the effectiveness and tolerance of the same daily dosage given as a single morning dose. On admission, patients were changed over immediately to the new dosage regimen and continued on it for 3 months. Blood pressure and pulse rate measurements were made on the day before change over and then at the end of each month. The results indicated that once-a-day 400 mg acebutolol gave satisfactory continued control of blood pressure. Side-effects reported spontaneously by the patient, observed by the physician, and elicited in response to a questionnaire, diminished in incidence and severity in most of the patients during the trial period.

Four hundred and twenty-seven hypertensive patients in the United Kingdom have so far been admitted to two on-going open multicentre trials, and have been treated with acebutolol for periods ranging from 1 to 6 months. Oral dosages were within the range of 100 mg to 1200 mg/day in divided doses and were increased or decreased to suit individual requirements. The data on 366 patients completing more than 1 month's treatment were analysed. A high significant reduction in mean diastolic pressure was observed. This reduction was progressive up to 6-month's treatment and was the more marked as pre-treatment values were higher. There was a highly significant correlation between pre-treatment mean diastolic pressure and mean fall of diastolic pressure at 6-months' treatment. There was also a highly sigificant association between initial values and response, and between duration of treatment and response. The higher the pre-treatment value, the less likely was non-response. Response also increased as treatment duration increased. Although asthmatic patients were not excluded, only 2 of the 427 patients included in the present study had to discontinue treatment because of the occurrence of airways obstruction; only 1 of these patients had experienced asthma previously.

Five patients with fascioliasis presented with malaise, pruritus, and pain in the right hypochondrium. Eosinophilia, increase in serum gamma globulin, and pyrexia were other features. Four patients treated with oral bithionol recovered completely and it is suggested that this is an effective form of therapy. The double diffusion precipitin test, being speedy and simple, was used as a screening procedure for diagnosis. The source of infection was wild watercress growing in a farm ditch.

Platelet adhesiveness has been assessed on whole blood from a series of 34 diabetics and 50 control subjects using adenosine diphosphate (A.D.P.) and by adherence to glass microspherules (ballotini). Using both techniques it was possible to demonstrate a significant increase in platelet adhesiveness in the diabetic patients.
