RESUMEN

Psychic trouble is not generally recognised as a possible complication of posterior fossa surgery. Reviewing a series of 63 pediatric patients operated on for posterior fossa intraxial tumors, the Authors found 21 cases of psychic troubles in the post-operative period. The incidence was higher in: a) medulloblastoma; b) rostral vermis location; c) supracerebellar infratentorial and transvermian approach. The neuropathophysiological basis of the phenomenon is discussed.

RESUMEN

A clinical and genetic study was performed on 20 patients affected by early onset cerebellar ataxia with retained tendon reflexes (EOCA). Mean age at onset was 8.8 (SD 6.0) years. The frequency distribution of age of onset significantly differed from the normal distribution. Consanguinity rate was 16.7% and segregation ratio 0.164. As well as ataxia, which was a constant feature, there were signs of involvement of the cortico-spinal tracts and/or peripheral nerves in most patients. Results of neurophysiological studies were not homogeneous, nor were morphological findings of the sural nerve biopsy. The data suggest that EOCA may be genetically and clinically heterogeneous.

RESUMEN

The authors recorded pattern electroretinograms at different spatial frequencies in 16 patients affected with ocular hypertension. In 12 of these subjects the electroretinograms dropped in amplitude around 2 cycles/degree. The authors attributed this finding to ocular hypertension, hypothesizing ischemic damage at the head of the optic nerve with consequent fiber atrophy and degeneration of ganglion cells.
