RESUMEN
The genus Psittacanthus (Loranthaceae) is widely distributed in the Neotropical region, where it is known for its large, colourful, scentless flowers. Until very recently, all Psittacanthus species were regarded as exclusively hummingbird-pollinated and the large species radiation in the genus attributed to the interactions with bird dispersers and pollinators. P. eucalyptifolius (Kunth) G.Don. is the only species reported as bee-pollinated. Here we describe the floral biology, floral visitors, and the reproductive system of P. eucalyptifolius in an Amazonian savanna, Brazil. We also compare the pollination success (reproductive performance) among different Psittacanthus species reported in previous studies. Psittacanthus eucalyptifolius produces sweet-scented flowers, and a small quantity of concentrated nectar. At least five species of scopate bees were recorded visiting and carrying pollen of P. eucalyptifolius. Xylocopa frontalis carried most pollen, visited more flowers, remained longer, and touched reproductive parts of flowers in >95% of the observed visits. Experiments indicate that P. eucalyptifolius is partially autocompatible (39% autonomous pollination) but depends on pollinators to achieve higher performance (~78% in control), indicating that bees can be as effective as birds in pollinating this group of mistletoes.

SETTING: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a challenge in Brazil, particularly among prison inmates. OBJECTIVE: To assess TB prevalence by active case finding in a public prison in southern Brazil. DESIGN: Prison inmates were screened for TB using the presence of cough and chest X-ray (CXR) from October 2014 to August 2016. Presence of cough, irrespective of duration, and abnormal CXRs were further investigated using laboratory tests. RESULTS: Of 10 326 inmates screened, 196 had confirmed TB (1898/100 000 inmates screened). At the first screening, 1759 inmates presented with cough only, 16 of whom had TB; among those with only abnormal CXR (n = 1273), 92 had TB. Xpert was positive in 155 patients, and negative in 15; these results were confirmed using culture. The remaining 26 patients did not undergo Xpert testing and were confirmed using microscopy (27%), culture (42%) or both (31%). CONCLUSION: The combined use of symptom screening (cough) and CXR was much more effective in maximising TB yield than using either method alone. If patients presenting with cough alone had not been investigated, 10% of TB patients would have been missed; if those with abnormal CXR but no cough had not been investigated, 51% of TB patients would have been missed. We detected high TB prevalence in this prison by using active case finding.

Breast Cancer is a complex disease characterized by the occurrence of multiple molecular alterations. Currently, some molecular markers are in use for breast cancer diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive purposes. Thus, genetic signatures are available for improving the decision-making. The biomarkers are also essential as therapeutic approaches, but many questions remain due to the lack of efficacy on breast cancer treatment, mainly for triple-negative breast cancer subtype. Since the genetic profile of breast cancer can also be related to different ethnic groups and geographic areas, the reference populations of the genetic assays and clinical trials need to include a broader population beyond the European and North American patients. In this review, we analyzed the current and potential molecular markers that could help to improve the strategies for breast cancer therapy.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the internal quality control indicators and quality management programme in a university cytopathology laboratory. METHODS: All results of conventional cervical smears tests (taken from the SISCAN, the Brazilian cervical cancer screening system) of women aged ≥15 years at the time of Papanicolaou smear specimen collection during January 2007-December 2014 were included. The final results of the cytopathology were classified in accordance with the Bethesda System. The variables included in the database were the woman's name, date of birth, and age at the time of sampling (15-30, 31-40 and older than 40 years). RESULTS: In this period, 50 286 cytopathology examinations were carried out. Of these, 44 386 (91.34%) were negative for malignancy or unsatisfactory and 4209 (8.66%) presented epithelial abnormalities. The percentage of the tests consistent with atypical squamous cells (ASC) between satisfactory examinations was 4.12%; the percentage of tests compatible with ASC among abnormal examinations was 47.87%; the ASC/squamous intraepithelial lesion) ratio was 0.97 and the percentage of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion among satisfactory tests was 2.21%, and the 5-year retrospective review identified 4.97% of false-negative results. CONCLUSION: All rates obtained were consistent over the years and within the recommended values by Federal Regulation of Brazil. This demonstrates the efficacy of our established internal quality monitoring and continuing education, reflecting the commitment of the team involved in the release of smear reports.

We investigate the effect of the node degree and energy E on the electronic wave function for regular and irregular structures, namely, regular lattices, disordered percolation clusters, and complex networks. We evaluate the dependency of the quantum probability for each site on its degree. For a class of biregular structures formed by two disjoint subsets of sites sharing the same degree, the probability P_{k}(E) of finding the electron on any site with k neighbors is independent of E≠0, a consequence of an exact analytical result that we prove for any bipartite lattice. For more general nonbipartite structures, P_{k}(E) may depend on E as illustrated by an exact evaluation of a one-dimensional semiregular lattice: P_{k}(E) is large for small values of E when k is also small, and its maximum values shift towards large values of |E| with increasing k. Numerical evaluations of P_{k}(E) for two different types of percolation clusters and the Apollonian network suggest that this observed feature might be generally valid.
RESUMEN
Previous investigations suggested that elevated cell-free DNA (cfDNA) can indicate non-healthy states. However, the potential association between cfDNA seminal plasma levels and fertility sperm parameters has not yet been determined. Therefore, the present study evaluated the association between seminal cfDNA levels and sperm fertility criteria to determine the use of seminal cfDNA quantification. An in vivo protocol quantified cfDNA levels of semen samples obtained from 163 male patients using fluorescent PicoGreen dye staining. To confirm if semen cfDNA quantification is realistic, an in vitro complementary test was performed using three or four semen samples. The fresh sperm samples were exposed to paraquat that generates high levels of superoxide anion causing oxidative stress and cell mortality. The results showed significant association between dsDNA levels and several sperm fertility parameters, such as low viability and alterations of motility and morphology. The in vitro analysis confirmed the association between dsDNA levels and sperm viability. Together, these results suggest that dsDNA levels could be an important biomarker to test sperm fertility.

Introduction: Formal care offered to dependent old adults cannot be unlinked from the support which family members provide. In this sense, the care provided by health professionals converges with the informal care provided by family members, creating a holistic support to the old adult. Therefore, a greater knowledge on the degree of dependence of the old adult and on the characteristics of the informal care provided by the family members can contribute to a better care for these adults. Objectives: To assess the support provided by the family members of institutionalized old adults in a state of dependency, and describe the degree of this dependency. Methods: This is a descriptive and cut-exploratory study on institutionalized old adults in a state of dependency, from a region of northern Portugal. The sample was non-random rational (n = 111). The used questionnaire-instrument was organized in three areas: group I included the demographic characterization; the group II included the Barthel index, and the group III included the Family Support Perception Inventory. Results: It was evidenced that the majority of old adults always, or almost always, receive support from their families, which highlighted the dimension of Family Adaptation. The profile of the participants is characterized by a predominance of women with a severe or moderate degree of dependency. Conclusions: Institutionalized old adults in a state of dependency have support from their families. Though living separately, the continuity of affective links between these adults and their families was highlighted.

Gall inducers use these structures as shelters and sources of nutrition. Consequently, they cause multiple physiological changes in host plants. We studied the impact caused by seed coat galls of a braconid wasp on the performance of fruits, seeds and seedlings of tree Inga laurina. We tested whether these seed galls are 'nutrient sinks' with respect to the fruit/seed of host plant, and so constrain the reproductive ability and reduce seedling longevity. We measured the influence of such galls on the secondary compounds, fruit and seed parameters, seed viability and germination and seedling performance. Inga laurina has indehiscent legumes with polyembryonic seeds surrounded by a fleshy sarcotesta rich in sugars. The galls formed inside the seed coat and galled tissues presented higher phenol concentrations, around 7-fold that of ungalled tissues. Galls caused a significant reduction in parameters such as fruit and seed size, seed weight and the number of embryos. Fluctuating asymmetry (a stress indicator) was 31% higher in leaves of galled seed plants in comparison to ungalled seed plants. However, the negative effects on fruit and seed parameters were not sufficient to reduce seed germination (except the synchronization index) or seedling performance (except leaf area and chlorophyll content). We attributed these results to the ability of I. laurina to tolerate gall attack on seeds without a marked influence on seedling performance. Moreover, because of the intensity of seed galling on host plant, we suggest that polyembryony may play a role in I. laurina reproduction increasing tolerance to seed damage.

Jatropha curcas L. is one of the most promising oilseeds for biodiesel and biokerosene production, but few basic studies or breeding programs have been conducted for the species. We estimated genetic parameters and diversity based on 10 yield traits in 77 half-sib progenies of J. curcas after 52 months in the field, and evaluated correlations between them and the oil content of the seeds. The mean grain yield per plant was 377.9 g (ranging from 169.8 to 772.1 g) and the mean oil content was 36.2% (ranging from 30 to 39.6%). Moderate estimates of heritability at the mean progeny level were obtained for the length of the fruit (84.7%), length (69.1%) and width (68.2%) of the seed, and grain yield per plant (62.2%). Oil content was only positively and significantly correlated with 100-seed weight. Our study revealed a range of possible crosses to be investigated in J. curcas. Progeny production should be evaluated over several crop seasons for the accurate selection of the best progenies.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we present a strategy for RHD gene screening based on real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using dried blood spots of pooled samples. BACKGROUND: Molecular analysis of blood donors may be used to detect RHD variants among the presumed D-negative individuals. RHD genotyping using pooled samples is a strategy to test a large number of samples at a more reasonable cost. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RHD gene detection based on real-time PCR using dried blood spots of pooled samples was standardised and used to evaluate 1550 Brazilian blood donors phenotyped as RhD-negative. Positive results were re-evaluated by retesting single samples using real-time PCR and conventional multiplex PCR to amplify five RHD-specific exons. PCR-sequence-specific primers was used to amplify RHDψ allele. RESULTS: We devised a strategy for RHD gene screening using dried blood spots of five pooled samples. Among 1550 serologically D-negative blood donors, 58 (3.74%) had the RHD gene. The non-functional RHDψ allele was detected in 47 samples (3.02%). CONCLUSION: The present method is a promising strategy to detect the RHD gene among presumed RhD-negative blood donors, particularly for populations with African ancestry.

BACKGROUND: A nephrologist with expertise in ultrasonography noticed that patients with longstanding renal grafts had smaller spleens than subjects undergoing initial post-transplantation imaging. This putative finding prompted us to pursue a further investigation into splenic function based on Doppler ultrasound and hematologic parameters. METHODS: We enrolled 47 patients with functioning long-standing kidney grafts, measuring longitudinal diameter of the spleen, hilar and intrasplenic peak systolic velocities (PSV), and hilar and intrasplenic resistivity indices of the splenic artery as well as mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears were examined for the presence of Howell-Jolly bodies (HJBs) using light microscopy. The patients were then divided into HJB present (HJ(+)) or absent (HJ(-)) groups for further comparison. RESULTS: The overall mean age of 21 females and 26 males was 47.8 ± 12.0 years, and the mean time after transplantation was 2750 ± 1818 days (range, 208-6446). HJBs were detected in 23/47 patients (48.9%). The intrasplenic artery PSV was significantly lower and MAP higher in the HJ(+) group (P < .05). There was no difference in spleen size between the groups. DISCUSSION: HJBs in peripheral blood red cells, an indicator of hyposplenism, was associated with reduced intrasplenic artery PSV, suggesting dysfunction, which may play a role in the known vulnerability of renal transplant recipients to infections.

Transfer of molecular markers is widely used in conservation genetic studies. We investigated the transferability of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers developed for Enterolobium cyclocarpum to E. contortisiliquum, a tropical tree widely distributed in dry forests. A set of 9 evaluated SSR markers were amplified in E. contortisiliquum and the degree of polymorphism was assessed in 8 trees sampled from each of 5 populations from central Brazil. All loci were polymorphic and the mean number of alleles for all loci was 6. In addition, all pairs of SSR markers were in linkage equilibrium. For most loci, the observed heterozygosity was higher than the expected heterozygosity under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with fixation indices not significantly different from zero. The combined probability of paternity exclusion was high and the probability of identity was very low. We conclude that these SSR markers developed for E. cyclocarpum are applicable for genetic studies of E. contortisiliquum.

Increased susceptibility to infection has long been observed among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, and still represents a chief cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. This is due in part to the severity of infection and to the difficulty of early diagnosis owing to the similarity between SLE flares and infection. Epidural infection is an uncommon condition, and a most rare condition caused by salmonella, which accounts for a broad spectrum of human illnesses from gastroenteritis and typhoid fever to the asymptomatic carrier state. We report the first case of epidural abscess caused by Salmonella enteritidis in a female with SLE with protean manifestations treated by intravenous antibiotics and surgery with full recovery of neurological symptoms, illustrating the importance of performing an early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

We investigate the role of disorder on the fracturing process of heterogeneous materials by means of a two-dimensional fuse network model. Our results in the extreme disorder limit reveal that the backbone of the fracture at collapse, namely, the subset of the largest fracture that effectively halts the global current, has a fractal dimension of 1.22 ± 0.01. This exponent value is compatible with the universality class of several other physical models, including optimal paths under strong disorder, disordered polymers, watersheds and optimal path cracks on uncorrelated substrates, hulls of explosive percolation clusters, and strands of invasion percolation fronts. Moreover, we find that the fractal dimension of the largest fracture under extreme disorder, d(f) = 1.86 ± 0.01, is outside the statistical error bar of standard percolation. This discrepancy is due to the appearance of trapped regions or cavities of all sizes that remain intact till the entire collapse of the fuse network, but are always accessible in the case of standard percolation. Finally, we quantify the role of disorder on the structure of the largest cluster, as well as on the backbone of the fracture, in terms of a distinctive transition from weak to strong disorder characterized by a new crossover exponent.
RESUMEN
Using numerical simulations of a simple sea-coast mechanical erosion model, we investigate the effect of spatial long-range correlations in the lithology of coastal landscapes on the fractal behavior of the corresponding coastlines. In the model, the resistance of a coast section to erosion depends on the local lithology configuration as well as on the number of neighboring sea sides. For weak sea forces, the sea is trapped by the coastline and the eroding process stops after some time. For strong sea forces erosion is perpetual. The transition between these two regimes takes place at a critical sea force, characterized by a fractal coastline front. For uncorrelated landscapes, we obtain, at the critical value, a fractal dimension D=1.33, which is consistent with the dimension of the accessible external perimeter of the spanning cluster in two-dimensional percolation. For sea forces above the critical value, our results indicate that the coastline is self-affine and belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In the case of landscapes generated with power-law spatial long-range correlations, the coastline fractal dimension changes continuously with the Hurst exponent H, decreasing from D=1.34 to 1.04, for H=0 and 1, respectively. This nonuniversal behavior is compatible with the multitude of fractal dimensions found for real coastlines.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate accuracy of linear measurements assessed from axial tomograms and the influence of the use of different protocols in two cone beam CT (CBCT) units. METHODS: A cylinder object consisting of Nylon® (Day Brazil, Sao Paulo, Brazil) with radiopaque markers was radiographically examined applying different protocols from NewTom 3G(TM) (Quantitative Radiology s.r.l, Verona, Veneto, Italy) and i-CAT(TM) (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, PA) units. Horizontal (A-B) and vertical (C-D) distances were assessed from axial tomograms and measured using a digital calliper that provided the gold standard for actual values. RESULTS: There were differences when considering acquisition protocols to each CBCT unit. Concerning all analysed protocols from i-CAT(TM) and Newtom 3G(TM), both A-B and C-D distances presented underestimated values. Measurements of the axial images obtained from NewTom 3G(TM) (6 inch 0.16 mm and 9 inch 0.25 mm) were similar to the ones obtained from i-CAT(TM) (13 cm 20 s 0.3 mm, 13 cm 20 s 0.4 mm and 13 cm 40 s 0.25 mm). CONCLUSION: The use of different protocols from CBCT machines influences linear measurements assessed from axial images. Linear distances were underestimated in both equipments. Our findings suggest that the best protocol for the i-CAT(TM) is 13 cm 20 s 0.3 mm and for the NewTom 3G(TM), the use of 6 inch or 9 inch is recommended.

The optimal path crack model on uncorrelated surfaces, recently introduced by Andrade et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 225503 (2009).], is studied in detail and its main percolation exponents computed. In addition to ß/ν=0.46±0.03, we report γ/ν=1.3±0.2 and τ=2.3±0.2. The analysis is extended to surfaces with spatial long-range power-law correlations, where nonuniversal fractal dimensions are obtained when the degree of correlation is varied. The model is also considered on a three-dimensional lattice, where the main crack is found to be a surface with a fractal dimension of 2.46±0.05.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of exercise in anatomic abnormalities of the pelvic floor (SP) and the quality of life (QOL) of women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). METHOD: An experimental study with 50 women with SUI, distributed randomly into two groups, experimental (GE, 49.24±7.37 years) and control group (CG; 45.25±5.60 years). The groups performed ultrasound evaluation of the SP, evidence of pelvic floor muscle strength by palpation bidigital, surface EMG motor activity and replied to the CV before and after treatment. The GE had 16 sessions of pelvic floor exercises twice a week for 30min. RESULTS: Comparison between the GE and GC revealed significant differences in favor of GE, namely: mobility of the bladder neck (Δ=-0.79mm, p=0.00), thickness of pelvic floor muscle (Δ=-0.04mm, p=0.00), EMG (Δ=0.05.V, p=0.00), muscle strength by the AFA (Δ=0.05 level, p=0.00), DOMI1 (Δ%=5.67%, p=0.00), DOMI2 (Δ%=18.00%, p=0.00), DOMI3 (Δ%=18.22%, p=0.00), DOMI4 (Δ%=4.45%, p=0.00), DOMI5 (Δ%=0.22%, p=0.00), DOMI6 (Δ%=2.00%, p=0.00), DOMI7 (Δ%=3.78%, p=0, 00), DOMI8 (Δ%=6.33%, p=0.00), DOMI9 (Δ%=4.03%, p=0.00). CONCLUSION: It was modified and improved anatomic features of the pelvic floor of women from GE through perineal exercises, which will positively influence the CV of these women.
