The spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) is one of the most important pests of sugarcane in Brazil. Measures for population control are currently restricted to the use of chemical insecticides and fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, in part because very little information exists regarding resistance of sugarcane cultivars. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate resistance mechanisms of 12 different sugarcane cultivars to M. fimbriolata to provide information for growers for pest management. Isolated buds of each cultivar were planted in pots and kept in a greenhouse for approximately three months. The pots were then moved to climate test chambers (26 ± 1 ºC; 70 ± 10 % relative humidity; 12 h photoperiod) to carry out laboratory tests to evaluate adult feeding and female oviposition preferences (using both free-choice and no-choice tests) as well as the effects of cultivars on nymph development and cultivars tolerance to pest attack. The least attractive cultivars for adult feeding were IACSP96-2042 and IAC91-1099. Cultivars IACSP96-2042, IACSP96-3060 and IACSP94-2101 received the fewest eggs in the free-choice and no-choice oviposition tests and exhibited some level of antixenosis resistance. Cultivar IAC91-1099 showed the highest level of antibiosis resistance with a nymph survival rate in the roots of only 20 %. Finally, cultivar IACSP94-2094 appears to be tolerant to M. fimbriolata, as it did not show significant reductions in aboveground biomass weight, despite showing reduced leaf chlorophyll levels following pest attack.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is currently one of the most efficient crops in the production of first-generation biofuels. However, the bagasse represents an additional abundant lignocellulosic resource that has the potential to increase the ethanol production per plant. To achieve a more efficient conversion of bagasse into ethanol, a better understanding of the main factors affecting biomass recalcitrance is needed. Because several studies have shown a negative effect of lignin on saccharification yield, the characterization of lignin biosynthesis, structure, and deposition in sugarcane is an important goal. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first systematic study of lignin deposition during sugarcane stem development, using histological, biochemical, and transcriptional data derived from two sugarcane genotypes with contrasting lignin contents. Lignin amount and composition were determined in rind (outer) and pith (inner) tissues throughout stem development. In addition, the phenolic metabolome was analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, which allowed the identification of 35 compounds related to the phenylpropanoid pathway and monolignol biosynthesis. Furthermore, the Sugarcane EST Database was extensively surveyed to identify lignin biosynthetic gene homologs, and the expression of all identified genes during stem development was determined by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Our data provide, to our knowledge, the first in-depth characterization of lignin biosynthesis in sugarcane and form the baseline for the rational metabolic engineering of sugarcane feedstock for bioenergy purposes.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito da época de corte sobre a composição bromatológica e digestibilidade in vitro de genótipos de cana-de-açúcar, comparar a composição bromatológica e digestibilidade in vitro das frações colmo e folhas, e estabelecer possíveis correlações entre composição química e digestibilidade in vitro da planta inteira de genótipos da cana-de-açúcar. Nove genótipos foram colhidos em maio e setembro de 2006. Em maio, somente a fração planta inteira foi analisada, em setembro foram separados em colmos, folhas ou planta inteira para determinação da composição bromatológica, sacarose (POL) e digestibilidade in vitro. Colmos apresentaram menor teor de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e lignina na MS, e maior digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (DIVMS) do que folhas. Em contrapartida, apresentaram menor digestibilidade in vitro da FDN (DIVFDN), maior teor de lignina na FDN e menor concentração de proteína bruta (PB). Houve redução no teor e digestibilidade da FDN com o avanço da maturidade, enquanto que DIVMS, POL e lignina aumentaram. A DIVMS se mostrou negativamente correlacionada com FDN e FDN/POL, porém não houve correlação entre DIVFDN e FDN ou FDN/POL. Conclui-se que o avanço da maturidade promoveu redução na DIVFDN e aumento na DIVMS, não existindo correlação genética entre acúmulo de açúcar e digestibilidade in vitro da fibra. Os dados deste artigo indicam não ser esperado que a seleção de genótipos com maior DIVFDN do colmo altere o teor de açúcar do mesmo.
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of time of harvest on chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of sugarcane genotypes, to compare chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of the stem and leaf fractions, and to determine possible correlations between chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of the whole plant in sugarcane genotypes. Nine genotypes were harvested in May and September of 2006. In May, only the whole-plant fraction was analyzed, in September the genotypes were separated in stems, leaves or whole-plant for determination of chemical composition, sucrose (POL) and in vitro digestibility. Stems had lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and lignin in the DM, and greater in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) than leaves. However, stems had lower in vitro NDF digestibility (IVNDFD), higher lignin in the NDF and lower crude protein (CP). The NDF and IVNDFD were reduced with advanced maturity, while IVDMD, POL and lignin were increased. IVDMD was negatively correlated with NDF and NDF/POL, however there was no correlation between IVFDND and NDF or NDF/POL. It can be concluded that with the advance in maturity the IVNDFD was reduced and IVDMD was increased, and there was no genetic correlation between accumulation of sugar and in vitro fiber digestibility. Data from this study indicate that it is not expected that selection of genotypes with greater stem IVNDFD would alter the sugar content of the plant.

Com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos da aplicação de diferentes fontes e doses de silicato de cálcio na cultura da cana-de-açúcar, cultivar SP80-1816, instalou-se um experimento num Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo distrófico, em área localizada no alambique João Mendes - "JM" (Sítio Vó Zirica), no Município de Perdões, Estado de Minas Gerais. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, quatro repetições, esquema fatorial 3x3+1, sendo três fontes de silicato de cálcio (Silifértil, Extrativa e Agronelli) e três doses (150, 300 e 450 kg/ha), mais um tratamento adicional, sem silicato(controle), totalizando 10 tratamentos. As diferentes fontes e doses foram aplicadas no sulco de plantio juntamente com adubação NPK. A aplicação de silicato de cálcio no sulco de plantio, independente das fontes e doses utilizadas, proporcionou um aumento no teor de fibra ( por cento) cana, mas não influenciou o rendimentos de colmos colhidos e de açúcar total recuperável (ATR), além dos teores de brix, pol e pureza ( por cento) cana.
With the objective of studying the effects of the application of different sources and doses of calcium silicate on the sugar-cane culture, cultivar SP80-1816, one installed an experiment in a Typic Hapludox, in an area located at the João Mendes - "JM" distillery (Sítio Vó Zirica), in the Municipal district of Perdões, in the state of Minas Gerais. A random block experimental layout was used, with four repetitions and a 3x3+1 factorial outline, three being sources of calcium silicate (Silifértil, Extrativa e Agronelli) and three being doses (150, 300 and 450 kg/ha), an additional treatment, without silicate (control), totalizing 10 treatments. The different sources and doses were applied in the planting furrow together with NPK manuring. The application of calcium silicate in the planting furrow, independently of the sources and doses used, provided an increase in the fiber level percent/cane, but didn't influence the total yield recoverable sugar (ATR) brix, pol e pureness ( percent) of cane plant.

Conduziu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos de três sistemas de adubação (30 t. ha-1 de esterco de curral, 3,5 t.ha-1 de esterco de galinha e adubação química - 120 kg.ha-1 de P2O5 e de K2O no plantio + 60 kg.ha-1 de N em cobertura) e três épocas de colheita da cana (julho, agosto e setembro de 2003), na qualidade da matéria-prima e nos rendimentos de colmos e de açúcar mascavo de duas cultivares de cana-de-açúcar (SP79-1011 e RB72454). O experimento foi instalado em área do Alambique JM, Perdões, MG. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial (2 x 3 x 3), com três repetições. Não houve efeito dos fertilizantes nos rendimentos de colmos e de açúcar mascavo das cultivares estudadas. Verificou-se efeito de épocas de colheita no rendimento de colmos, com destaque para os meses de agosto e setembro. No entanto, para rendimento de açúcar mascavo nenhuma diferença foi observada. Assim, nas condições deste trabalho, é viável a substituição da adubação química pela orgânica (esterco de curral ou de galinha), sem perdas na qualidade da matéria-prima e nos rendimentos de colmos e de açúcar mascavo artesanal, sendo que os meses de agosto e setembro foram os que proporcionaram matéria-prima de melhor qualidade e maiores rendimentos de colmos.
The objective of this work was to study the effects of three fertilizers process (30 t. ha-1 ofcorral manure, 3,5 t.ha-1 of chicken manure and chemical fertilizer - 120 kg.ha-1 of P2O5 and of K2O at planting time + 60 kg.ha-1 of N in covering) and three harvest dates (July, August and September of 2003), in the agricultural yield and of raw-sugar of two sugarcane cultivars (SP79-1011 and RB72454). The experiment was carried out in Alambique JM farm in Perdões, MG, Brazil. The experimental design was a factorial 2x3x3, in randomized blocks, with three replications. No effects of the fertilizers studied in the agricultural yield and of raw-sugar of the cultivars were verified. There was effect of harvest dates in the yield of stems of the cultivars, with prominence for the month of August and September. However, the yield of raw-sugar was not affected. Thus, in the conditions applied to this work, the small producers can choose for one of the studied ways of organic fertilizer, since they did not differentiated from the chemical fertilizer, and the months of August and September were that which provided larger stems yield, and sugarcane quality.
