RESUMEN

Attitudes toward wildlife can have direct implications on children's interest in conservation behaviors. Animal programs are an example of interactive, educational experiences that have the potential to change attitudes by providing individuals the opportunity to get close to animal ambassadors and participate in engaging conversations about them. We conducted an animal program assessment with summer camps at the Ohio Wildlife Center to quantify changes in children's affiliation with local wildlife and their willingness to live near local wildlife. Campers showed an overall increase in affiliation and willingness scores from before to after an animal program, although with a small effect size. Overall willingness scores were lower than affiliation scores, but there was a significantly larger increase in willingness following the program. We found a strong correlation between affiliation and willingness scores. Overall, the study found that these animal programs positively influenced children's attitudes toward local wildlife and increased their willingness to live near them, suggesting animal programming could be used to decrease human-wildlife conflict. Visually seeing animals in the programs improved attitude scores, even for those not seen in this study, which suggests that program animals can act as an ambassador for other species. This opens the potential for utilizing animal ambassadors as powerful tools in conservation education about threatened and endangered species.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This article describes the authors' development of a pediatric medication administration guideline for use by preprocedure nurse callers. Preprocedure refers to procedures done with general anesthesia such as surgery, endoscopy, or magnetic resonance imaging. DESIGN: This article describes a process improvement project. METHODS: The literature was searched using Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Google. No existing peer-reviewed pediatric preprocedure medication administration guidelines were found. A guideline with instructions for commonly prescribed pediatric medications was developed. FINDINGS: Use of the guideline improves patient safety by providing clear medication administration instructions, while increasing the efficiency and autonomy of our nurse callers. Surveys of the nurse callers demonstrated that the guideline was clear, caregivers were receptive to receiving instructions from nurse callers, and use of the guideline decreased the number of calls made to other providers. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a medication administration guideline improves patient safety, nurse efficiency, and nurse autonomy.

RESUMEN

Ongoing challenges caused by increased complexity of care, changing patient demographics, and shifting health care delivery systems are necessitating a transformation of advanced practice. The practice doctorate has the potential to prepare graduates to meet these challenges now and in the future. This article conceptualizes the practice doctorate curriculum for nurse practitioners (NPs), with particular focus on how it will prepare NPs as expert clinicians with enhanced leadership and research skills. Nurse practitioner doctoral education and practice is articulated and differentiated from current NP education and practice, with distinguishing features clearly identified. A compelling argument is made for how this educational preparation will facilitate NPs in meeting future societal needs. The purpose of this article is to provide guidance for all advanced practice educational programs considering adoption of a practice doctorate, and to contribute to the advancement of thinking about the practice doctorate for clinicians as well as educators.
