RESUMEN

Novel chitosan polymers were synthesized using two cross-linkers, Glutaraldehyde and Terephthaldehyde, to enhance stability and efficiency. Characterization techniques (XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, TGA, DTG, BJH, and BET) confirmed successful synthesis. These polymers were employed as adsorbents for removing Malachite Green (MG) and Congo Red (CR) dyes from water. Batch experiments and DFT calculations investigated the adsorption process, thermodynamics, and kinetics. Results showed the CSGT-III polymer achieved the highest removal efficiency. For initial dye concentrations ([CR]o = 50 mg/L, [MG]o = 20 mg/L) and adsorbent doses (0.8 g/L for CR, 0.4 g/L for MG), removal efficiencies were 96.99 % for CR and 99.07 % for MG. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed the spontaneous nature of adsorption, and the process was endothermic for both dyes. The Langmuir model fitted adsorption isotherms well, indicating a homogeneous surface. Kinetic analysis revealed a pseudo-second-order model for both dyes.

A newly developed water-soluble polymeric nano-additive termed "partially cross-linked nanoparticles graft copolymer (PCLNPG)" has been successfully synthesized and harnessed as a pore former for modifying a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane for dyes removal. The PCLNPG content was varied in the PES polymeric matrix aiming to scrutinize its impact on membrane surface characteristics, morphological structure, and overall performance. Proposed interaction mechanism between methylene blue (MB), methyle orange (MO), and malachite green (MG) dyes with PES membrane was presented as well. Hydrophilicity and porosity of the novel membrane increased by 18 and 17 %, respectively, when manufactured with a 3 Wt. % PCLNPG, according to the findings. Besides this, the disclosed increased porosity, rather than the hydrophilic properties of the water-soluble PCLNPG, was the principal cause of the diminished contact angle. Meanwhile, raising the PCLNPG content in the prepared membrane made worthy shifts in its structure. A sponge-like region was materialized near the bottom surface as well. The membrane's pure water flux (PWF) synthesized with 3 Wt.% PCLNPG recorded 628 LMH, which is estimated 3.95 fold the pristine membrane. MG, MB, and MO dyes were rejected by 90.6, 96.3, and 97.87 %, respectively. These findings showed that the performance characteristics of the PES/PCLNPG membrane make it a potentially advantageous option to treat the textile wastewater.

Major-religious festivals hosted in the city of Kerbala, Iraq, annually generate large quantities of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) which negatively impacts the environment and human health when poorly managed. The hospitality sector, specifically hotels, is one of the major sources of MSW generated during these festivals. Because it is essential to establish a proper waste management system for such festivals, accurate information regarding MSW generation is required. This study therefore investigated the rate of production of MSW from hotels in Kerbala during major festivals. A field questionnaire survey was conducted with 150 hotels during the Arba'een festival, one of the largest festivals in the world, attended by about 18 million participants, to identify how much MSW is produced and what features of hotels impact on this. Hotel managers responded to questions regarding features of the hotel such as size (Hs), expenditure (Hex), area (Ha) and number of staff (Hst). An on-site audit was also carried out with all participating hotels to estimate the mass of MSW generated from these hotels. The results indicate that MSW produced by hotels varies widely. In general, it was found that each hotel guest produces an estimated 0.89 kg of MSW per day. However, this figure varies according to the hotels' rating. Average rates of MSW production from one and four star hotels were 0.83 and 1.22 kg per guest per day, respectively. Statistically, it was found that the relationship between MSW production and hotel features can be modelled with an R2 of 0.799, where the influence of hotel feature on MSW production followed the order Hs > Hex > Hst.
